This is continued from a previous thread of mine. See Kyro 2 Arctic Silver Problems (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=48011). So I went along with the idea that the Arctic Silver epoxy caused that problem and received a new Kyro 2 card. Now I left it alone unmodified and went to install it. As soon as I press the power on button I smell something burning and a very faint amount of smoke coming from the case. I take the card out and reinsert it.......computer does not boot. No beeps no nothing. So I take both the new and old card to a different computer and they show no video. After carefully examining the bottom of the cards I notice at the same section on both there is a strip of paint on a conductive trace that is burnt and the copper is actually coming out of the trace! Now I am on my third card and this time I place the computer onto a table with only the power cable plugged in the back and try again. Now the computer boots and nothing is burnt. So I place the computer back on the floor and only connect the monitor and power cable. Same thing happens. This card gets burnt in the same place! Am I looking at a grounding problem or what? I had two other cards (sound and network) in the computer and they were not damaged. Any help!?

wow
that looks like some kind of ground problem...
maybe a bad AGP slot?

That is what I thought but it did work fine when I placed it on the table. I know there could be a problem with the IO voltage but that would probably affect the memory and processor. I know both of those are fine.

what do you mean by this?
you just put the computer on a table?
is it just with this motherboard that its burning up like this?
if so you may want to look for a new mobo:/

Yeah that's what I meant. I placed it on a table thinking it was a grounding problem and it did work. The minute I placed it (the computer) on the carpet and pressed the power button that is when I had the problem. The case I am using is a brand new case I had just put together and this is the first time I have used it. The other case I used was on the floor or carpet with the same hardware (video card, motherboard, etc.) except the case is setup a little different. If this case and everything else worked fine for a while I would suspect the motherboard too but I am thinking I am getting some type of static discharge.

Is your PSU propaply grounded?
Try a diff PSU a diff socket from your wall, diff power cable and let us know, or sit a plank of wood under your case.
Also how many plugs you got running off your Wall Socket? I had a similiar problem (only the little speaker caught fire though!!!) because I was overloading it, also try buying a surge protector.
Let us know, but please try an old card not all these Kryo's!!!!

Ok I narrowed it down folks. I placed the computer on a table with the monitor on the table. I plug the computer directly into a wall socket and power it on......I get a single beep and card is fine. I do this three or four times with no problem. Now this is the confusing part I plug the monitor cable into the card and power on the computer. Right away that same conductive trace gets burnt like all the others. Now there is no power at all going to the monitor (I didnt plug power cable to begin with) . I only plug the cable into the monitor and into the card. I tried the same monitor and cable on my laptop with no problems. No what do I do? I guess it wasn't a grounding problem after all.

Actually 3 dead KyroIIs will be the equivalent of 1/2 of a Geforce3 in price, they really need to come down...
