well i got my 2000 pro and backed up 98 se on cd's.formatted for dual boot ,got 2000 online,no prob.(i have cable with 10/100 card)but cant get 98 online, for some reason hp backup did not work.ran several disc's independantly and got some files (also had network connection)back but then aol downloaded network devices and again i am offline and am not sure why.
well what i want to ask is why should i need 98 anyway? can u guys see a difference playing games?does it handle anything better than 200? my 2000 pro is stable as heck even though 7 devices are sharing irq 11.i know 98se can't do that.
i need opinions should i sell my old 98se and just keep 2000 on my hd?the only reason i did the dual boot is to see if i could.well it worked so so,and i did like the fact i could access 98 through 2000( but not the other way around).anyway why do u dual boot?is it worth the trouble?
btw,i am a hardware geek and know squat about software.i do build systems for gamers and they seem to always want 98se.
thanks in advance. jeffc
i would say 98 is a trashy system compared to 2k, make sure you get SP 2 and dirx 8x, and wk will fly, the dirx is often a performance factor that is overlooked. i run 2kserver, and play and do most anything i want, but this is my opinion and i have seen a lot of opinions stating that 98 is the best going for gaming, but i really see no performance dif

For gaming variety, 98SE. It stills upports many of the older games, even really old DOS games. 2000 has a few problems with older games. Most problems are fixed with SP2, but some of the older DOS games won't work. 98 is also better since it doesn't have many background programs running, so there will be better framerates.
I personally don't dual boot, and don't really want to. 2000 is stable enough for me and I'm not a hardcore gamer. As long as UT and Starcraft work, I'll be happy. It's your opinion that counts as to wheter or not to keep 2000. Try out the features of 2000 a while and justify if it's worth keeping as your main OS.
AOL sucks. What version are you using?

98 is the best gaming os in my opinion and one of the faster os's but it comes at the sacrifice of stability. it takes me like 3 different installs of 98 before i can get it right which is why i highly recommend sticking with 2kpro. it's reliable, relatively fast, and did i mention reliable?
Win9x is junk, but the compatibility with hardware and older software IS still better than Win2K.
IF all your hardware is supported, and all the games you like run in WIN2K than you don't need to dual-boot.
Most people I know of who do run both do it because some game (or app) doesn't run in Win2K.
ALSO: there are a lot of services in Win2K you can disable to improve frame rates if you aren't using them.

MY TUPPENCE WORTH!!
i hate win 2k i had nowt but hassle with it and do not seem to encounter many probs with 98se
for a few poncy different wallpapers and a wee bit newer design yippee but for software compatibility its kak(ONLY MY OPINION not!)
I think Win2K is way better, unless you play the old games.
Reasons are it is NT Kernal and you should be using the NTFS partition which is the best with NT Kernal OS's.
Win9x has horrible stablity. Mainly all of the new games run with Win 2K or Win XP.
I'd go Windows 2000. Its much much better than 9x ever was/ever will be, and unless you play old games that require Real Mode DOS, you'll be fine.

win2000 is the better OS
much more stable, and with directX 8 and SP2 you will get good compatibility and speed with games
why worry about a 2 fps extra frame rate when its unstable?
u dont need to dual boot unless you have some application that doesnt work in win2k

guess ill back up 2000 and reformat.hope the backup works better in 200 than 98.

don't worry about those devices being on 1 irq, 2k practically puts everything on 11 irq. nothing you can do about it
heres's my .02 centavos...
Windows 95: May 98 - Sept. 01
Windows 98SE: Sept. 01 - Oct. 01
Windows 2000 Pro: Oct. 01 - Present
Windows 2000 Pro is the best for me thus far, now all I want is SP3. :burn:
