Ok, I have come across a tweak that can boost linux file system performance. Many people may already have probably seen this, but I'll pass it along.
First is IDE. By default, many distributions of linux come with DMA and 32 bit hard drive access mode disabled. If your computer is capable, enabling these settings can increase hard disk drive performance by 6x (in my case). Here is a link to explain this:
