Before i had to do a clean install using WinMe my modem was quiet i set my 3com modem to not make any noise through devise manager but it still sounds to its default low setting which i still cant stand, before i did this and it worked fine. Oh i tried setting it in Modem\control panel but still nothing any help would be appriciated. Oh i did try to remove the hardware through WinMe settings and reinstall but it reinstalls with a low sound setting which cannot be adjusted. I was using WinMe and the same modem and it worked before through the devise manager help Seti is waking me up in the middle of the night!
you know if you are actually doing this right, deselecting eanble modem speaker under network settings for your connection and all ---I can tell you that many years ago, when i first started messing with linux, i had a ploblem like you discribe and i broke the end of a cue tip off and depressed the diaphram in the 3com modem speaker and applied a good amount super glue and clamped so that glue held that broken cuetip in place, and i never heard anything from that modem again (: but i dont even know if you have a diaphram, but i would bet you could snip it

I taped my last one :) but i was hoping i was missing something and someone knew of a trick that would help me out, if no one replies I will be doing exactly what your getting at. Since it is a voice fax modem i really did not want to disable the speaker though.
Problem fixed after reading your reply i realized i did not disable it rite, as you said if your going to do it rite you need to do it through network connections after going through there and setting the modem to quiet it worked perfect :)
