righto
1/ i am havin not much joy with my chip but it will run with the HSF i have on @ 747(83x9) but reluctant as this may ruin pci devices and i aint chancing it so................if i take SB card and modem out and use onboard sound and an external modem i have will my hercules be safe in the AGP? as in not being affected by higher bus speeds?

2/ my chip is locked x9 is it poss to bring that down for burn-in?
3/ can i lower my fsb below stock 66mhz as i have been led 2 beleive that if i burn it in for a while my chip might accept the 100 fsb it took it np on another board(msi ms-6178) (and it was pin wrapped to get 1.95,but i can adjust my core up t0 3v in bios);)

To answer your initial question, I believe your Hercules AGP card will be just fine at 83mhz, but I think you should work with that CPU a little more. That 600 should make 100mhz, especially if it did on another board. Perhaps your new board is not quite delivering 1.95v at that setting. I've noticed that the 600s had a very fine line on the voltage they took for stability, in other words, just .02 or so seemed to be enough to make the difference between stability and failure. I think I'd try upping the voltage to 2.0v while keeping a close eye on my temps to see if that might get the CPU over the hump. The fact that you are at 83 and that it ran 100 before indiscates that it is very close, so you may be able to solve all of your bus concerns that way. Good luck!

thanks for your advice , i'l try it out + let you know how i get on.:burn:

Those Hercules MX cards will handle lots of overclocking. You cannot change the multiplier at all. Running a lower than default FSB is no problem (that's called underclocking). Before increasing voltage, I'd work on getting better cooling. I bet cooling is the problem in this situation. Check those load CPU temps and use a good thermal paste. What CPU cooler are you running right now?

i had a golden orb on it but have now put on the stock HS and replaced the fan with a faster one i had faster than stock and g.orb

'Unick' silicon heat transfer compound
madeby Unlok chemical corp.(do not know its quality but it was £3 + uk sterling

I would think both the Gorb and the retail HSF are rather marginal for that level of overclocking you are attempting. But, you would also think if the CPU ran at 100 FSB on another mobo, you ought to get it to 100 FSB that on the current board too. Make sure the "speed error check" is disabled in the BIOS and try the slower CAS-3 RAM timing in the BIOS too. You might consider rechecking the CPU heatsink to make sure it's make good contact and reapply your thermal paste. An extra case fan or two might help. I really would recommend a better CPU cooler though.

i know in my overclocking heart of hearts that cooling is my problem
for air cooling what sort of revs should i be looking for ideally?as the gorb done about 4400 and the fan i have on the now about 4850 ,,,(i just cleaned hsf and put fresh compound on 2 day ago when i took gorb away)
i had this idea but dont know if it it feesable,,,,,,,,,,,,i have a good long socket1 hs which i could attach 3 standrd fans but i dont know if its to much to take the clip from the bottom of the orb remove the 4 pins on the skt 1 hs attach the clip from the orb and hey presto a big massive 3 fan hsf with a nice clip to make it fit snug!!!! an idea but as i say maybe i can buy a hsf which will do just as good or better job? also put a case fan in week ago its a pretty standard 'CoolerMaster 80x80x25' and there is room for more ;) i got a old 100w psu in the pc parts cupboard would i gain anything(apart from more power outlets) by daisy chaining it to my 350w that came wiv case???? Thanx

Ok the therory on burnin is to up the voltage at stock mhz, like maybe 1.8-1.9v and run it for about a week, and try again.
I agree that the stock fan And the gorb are ok for a few extra mhz, but not much farther..there are some good reviews on heatsink/fans on overclockers main page....Alpha. Milenium, and Globalwin brands come to mind.
for thermal compound, you can't go wrong with Arctic Silver....but remember that a lot of people use too much compound..a razor thin layer is all you need...after all it is supposed to fill in the micro gaps between the cpu and heatsink.
If all your cards are running good at 83mhz fsb, then 100mhz would be a breeze, and a little safer (as far as the peripheral cards are concerned).
If you plan on keeping that mobo, you could add a heatsink to your clock generator, and it wouldn't hurt to check if the chipset cooler has thermal compound...some actualy ship without it, again use Arctic Silver or an equivelant, and if you have room, you might consider adding a fan to the chipset cooler if it doesn't already have one.
Like the other guy said, dissable "speed error hold"
and be less agressive on the memory timings. cas3 should do it, and once you get up to speed, then play with your mem timings.
Good luck, and if I think of anything else, I will edit this post.
Good luck, and happy holidays

Fan RPM might not be as important as how efficiently the heatsink conducts heat. I agree with Doc about his choices of CPU coolers and the need to better cool the northbridge chip too (motherboard chipset). However, he mentioned possibly needing to cool the clock generator, which might not really be needed unless your FSB exceeds 133 FSB. I have put heatsinks on the clock generator of my last two motherboards, but I'm running 150 or more FSB. It didn't seem to do much good at low FSB speeds though. One easy thing to do to help cool the northbridge is to just mount a 40mm fan right onto the existing sink. If you have to run a high voltage for overclocking, then you MUST have better cooling. I'm using an inexpensive GlobalWin FOP CPU cooler with a 80mm fan instead of a 60mm fan and that works great. There are much better coolers out now, but some of them are not cheap. Look on the homepage of this website and check out the socket 370 CPU cooler reviews.

is north bridge chip the one that allready got a heatsink on it(usually nearest the cpu+most i seen r green with two plastic pins holdin the hs down at diagonal corners mine is a gold color with no plastic bitz) or is it the next biggest chip in mycase sits right at the backside of me pci slots as i have intel chipset it says intel on it ........ta

Your northbridge chipset is the one with the green heatsink.

Yep, put a 40mm fan right onto this "greenie" heatsink. Go to the hardware store and find four sheet metal screws the right size and length and you can screw the screws right down into the the heatsink fins like the old 486 CPU coolers used to do. In fact, if you have an old junk 486 computer laying around collecting dust, recycle the CPU fan and use it.

fan i have spare is 60mm so im gonna swap my brother somthing to get the one one from his tnt 2 pro ;)
thanx guys ill post back when i get it sorted as i have just installed win2000 pro and need to install some stuff:burn:
