I read this http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=360283 about painting acrylics and was wondering if it's possible to do a semi complex design by only sanding/painting the design itself?

Such as something like this

onto a panel like this.

I was thinking that I could just tape off the parts of the design I don't want sanded/painted and just sand/paint the untaped areas?

If any one knows of a way to do something like this that be great :D

That's called masking and you generally use masking tape. Other ways would be to print your design off onto sticker paper, precut it and then remove the parts where you want paint. Basically making a stencil. It works well for painting, sanding can be a bit tricky.

Think just painting it on would get the same effect or close to it?

So rather than sand, prime and paint , just prime and paint?

Sticky on how to paint acrylic (http://http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=360283) very good info for this type of thing. Check the other stickies out as well, tons of useful knowledge in there.

BTW I almost missed it:welcome: to the forums..

Yeah... Welcome to the boards!

That design should be easy enough with masking tape alone. Your gona need a few different thicknesses of it... But its only a single color of paint requireing only one round of masking the design onto the window and it should turn out great.

Now, for the best finish, paint the inside of the window. You wont have to sand at all that way and risk scratching the window's finsih. Which means the lettering of your design might have to be masked in backwards.

Naturaly, only put tape over the parts of the design you want to be able to see through when your done.

Alright awesome! Thanks for the advice guys.

I haven't decided completely on the design yet but I'm thinking of putting that one on the side windows of my case(left and right) and doing this flame circle on the top one (red design in the background) http://www.inflames.com/

All else fails, I'll try to find two "tribalish" designs for it, on for the side windows and one on top.

Once again, thanks for the feedback and do you have any recommendations for paint? I loved the way the Rustoleum came out on the inside of my case so I think I'll use that unless there's something that would come out nicer on Acrylic.

Or the lazy method is to make a higher resolution version of the image then get http://www.quickstickers.com to make a vinyl decal for you.
:D

I was thinking about getting some decal material and an Exacto knife but the paint would be a nicer finish in my opinion :)

Edit: Picture of the left side and top, third window is on the right side of the case
