Well AVG free is going to end the middle of this month :( so i need a new AntiVirus. Here are the free ones that were recommended in the sticky...

Why, have you tried it to recommend that, I have been using it for months now and it is better then avg because it is pretty much a renamed kaspersky product, and I have never received spam resulting from downloading this.

Avast is my favorite so far. I have tried AntiVir, and even a few paid versions of Norton/Symantec. I love it because for the most part, you set it and forget it for 14 months, before you have to renew the activation. Activation is very painless, basically give them your name, e-mail, and a couple other small unobtrusive pieces of information, and they e-mail you the new key. I have never recieved a single piece of spam from the registration either. It automatically updates daily, and actively scans everything my computers do. Also seems to have a small memory footprint, I hardly ever notice it running.

I will never go back to AVG. Not from what happend to my comp acouple weeks ago. The "AOL" powered by Kaspersky AV found a lot of stuff that AVG didnt.

AVG was good 2-3 years ago. They lost their edge, IMO.

I just do not understand why everyone is so against Norton. Sure it is a bit overpriced but I have the 2007 3 pc edition that I got for around $40. I have worked for 3 companies in the past 12 years and they all used Norton Corporate Edition. One is a ~$350 million/year, one is $50 billion+/year and one is $500 million+/year and they never suffered a virus outbreak while I was working for them. Granted the $50b company severly restricted internet access but they did little about email. Also they most likely had very strong firewalls, spam filters, etc. But with 2000,000+ employees the systems never went down due to a virus (I do conceed that there was one outage affecting some equipment running Win2K but that was a vendor maintained system with near DMZ access to the network).

I for one am willing to pay $40 per year to protect my main computer. Hell, the wife and I spend more eating out on most Saturday Nights than that........ Since Norton now covers up to 3 computers I use it on my file server also (used to use AVG). I installed the 3rd copy on my mother's computer (saves me some virus fixing work :)).

In 7 years of using Norton I have never had a virus outbreak. That's enough reason for me to stick with them.

I don't like norton because it is a bit bloated for my taste, and because I can get better protection for free.

I just uninstalled all Norton stuff from my systems due to numerous problems and general slowdowns. Every time I install Norton stuff I get server out of memory errors, uninstall it and the errors disappear. I recommend Avast.

Listen to him. AOL screws up everything. its hard to delete off your computer unless you wipe it. my parents have it and all it does is reduce there performance. DON'T GET IT UNLESS YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PC.

Nortons corporate software is excellent. good detection and light on PC resources.

the home versions however have very bad detection rates (worse then most of the free anti-virus!) and uses alot of system resources.


If you have Symantec Corporate AV/FW then use it. Some people (like military members) get it for free. Ask your ITs about it :)

I swore by eset for a long time never even ran antispyware software with it because it was so good, but now I use Anti-Vir because its very small footprint and good detection rates at a great price :) (free)


AOL's free antivirus is great from what I hear (as mentioned kaspersky renamed AV) although I will stick with antivir for now and use the secpol.msc popup block method :)

I have never had any problems like the ones you have mentioned, and every decent antivirus will slow down a computer a bit due to the scanning of files being used.

you have no problem than. I personally dont like Norton i spent 60 something bucks a year and all i did wass get attacked with viruses. I bought it in 2005. I went to Macafee and its ok but no special features. Avast and AVG are good. just cuz there free, doesnt mean they suck.

The AVAST site asked for membership payment.

Heres the link to Avast home edition. click the download when you done, it will ask for a license key. go to registration which they want your Email which i think it. they will send you a key within 15 minutes to an hour. then there you have Avast. you might of clicked Pro and thats why it might of asked you for membership. Tell me if it works :)

Everyone should try the active virus shield by aol. I just used it on a friends system and it found 10 viruses on the system. Also it does have a big footprint on the system.

The antivirus is a different story then the aol program. They could make a better program but always rushes it out. With the antivirus, its just the aol logo not an aol program. You should also teach your parents how to use aol better, or try making it more stable for them. My parents, and sister use it with no problems.

sophos is better anyway, avg corp is good (network edition).

its a shame because KAV is good in domestic but the coorp version is junk
