Well you know me and how I like to get your attention. (hope I got it)

As you all might know I got an sk6 with a YS Tech fan on it. (that things alot louder then I though!!!) So what I did was take some of the o-rings (that I keep laying around for projects like this) and cut them up and used them as spacers inbetween the heat sync and fan.

After doing this you should notice a slight increase in fan speed and it won't be as noisy.

I would post some pix but I haven't taken any yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Cool on

I actually didn't have any rubber o rings, so I used cut up pieces of old mouse pad. It worked great on my case fans! No more rattling.

Good plan!

You'll notice that a lot of commercial coolers are getting designed with the fan spaced off the heatsink a little these days. I just modded a hsf yeasterday myself with stacks of washers under the fan screws to get some spacing, then I shrouded the top with electrical tape. I think it did some good, it's on a crappy old K6-2 setup, and I think I made it more stable on one speed and brought
another level into sight.

Two things reduce the noise with your mod, i) the rubber reduces any vibrational noise you had ii) the distance increase between the fan blades and the top of the fins quietened it too. So anybody who ain't got rubber parts may find any kind of washer or spacer will help.

Just one question. With the little bit of extra space won't you lose some of the precious airflow. In other words, did your temp go up a tad?

Actually it's meant to help a little as long as it's not too far away, something about losing power in turbulance on top of the fins, whereas a little spacing helps it flow more smoothly down into the sink. It only seems to have become apparent on taller sinks.

Mind you, I shrouded mine, just to make sure :)

I looked at it this way, higher RPM maybe HIGHER cfm. Though I don't know if I'm right and I your right it's not THAT far away, I raised it maybe an 1/8 of an inch??!?!?!?!

All I know if that it's a bit quiter and that's what counts for me!! I did see an increase in case temps cuz I disconnected on of my fans to help cut down on noise.

The only thing is you can TELL when the computer is off. It gets really really quite in the room!! hahaha

I'll take some pix and post later. I plan in adding a rehostat first.
