It has the potential to have better graphics, but right now the xbox 360 is betetr or the same as in gfx. I would go for a wii and a 360 combo instead of a PS3, but thats just me.
But that is good you can get ps3's on the shelf now
the ps3 has greater potential in what way??
also, doesn't the 360 have 3 dual core processors... i don't understand why that's even necessary... lol... how does the ps3 core processor compare in multi-threading aspects?

I don't think the xbox 360 hd-dvd drive will do very well. MS said they didn't plan on releasing any games on hd-dvd so its only good for watching movies, which means you still are going to be changing discs. With the ps3's built in bluray player it might be enough to help the format war, we'll see. As of right now, the only good game for ps3 is Resistance and Madden, but you can get Madden on the xbox too.

the console is only as great as the games make them to be.... playstation 2 as always been a less power work horse than the xbox. but it's proven that it was much more popular among the gamers... i'm not saying the PS3 is better than the Xbox 360.. but just wait a few more months or maybe a year...then we can decide what is better.

How do you figure the ps3 has better graphic potential, the xbox is dx10 capable according to everything I have read, the ps3 is not.

Just curious, do you mean Xbox360 has better graphic potential than PS3? Where did you read that? All the reviews I read about the battle between these consoles said PS3 is the "most powerful" console.

I think the problem with PS3 right now is the $600 price tag (which I think is not unreasonable at all), and the lag of game titles. As of to date, PS3 only has 3 good titles (to me). Call of duty 3, resistance: fall of men, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Only Resistance: Fall of men is exclusive title. I believe the true killer for PS3 right now is the software titles. just imagine if FF13 or Xenosaga...etc exclusive to PS3 is release right now. Everyone will have a hard time getting a PS3.
As mentioned above, i got a wii the second day it came out, and my buddy who wanted one at the same time finally found one yesterday. The wii, even though they had more units has been harder to find. I agree that its because the price tag. There isnt a reason to buy the 500 dollar one, therefore you have to reside yourself in paying 600 bucks for a console that you need to have a 3k television to really take advantage of. I will also be getting a wii/360 combo because of the lack of PS3 titles, and the number of problems the PS3 has been having with its software, IE no 1080i support, and some of the reverse compatability issues they have been having. The main advantage i see for buying the PS3 is merely for the blue-ray player. However again you need a high end TV to take complete utter advantage of it. Yep, wii for me, and xbox 360 for halo 3.

i pre-ordered halo3 from [i think] toys 'r us... like $45 shipped.. ETA july '07.
see... i think the ps3 could be worth it just b/c of the fact of the built-in bluray.
now, my 32" hdtv is a 720p panel that supports 1080i, but doesn't do 1080 resolution... so, i wouldn't be able to take advantage of the ps3 anyway, nevermind i don't even get the full 1080i quality... so i just stick it out with 720p on the 360.

*Edit*
I have seen the ps3 (not in HD) and the graphics AT ALL didnt impress me, for 700$ it is NOT worth it one bit.

ah, so we have to invest even more money on an HDTV and then pay our cable company extra 10bucks a month for an HDTV box to justify the PS3's graphics?
i will also say that their pricetag is just too much. its crazy considering video games are back up to $60 nowadays.
on the xbox side, newegg reviewers are recommending warranties and saying the thing crashes/breaks easily.

i wouldn't really call this a cyber deal as they are being sold at regular retail price. Most people that wanted them when they released wanted them to resell

Don't need a special HD box to run the systems in HD, thats just for HD programming. The 360 in HD is amazing, I have never seen it not in HD. On my 65" at 1080i...everyones jaw drops at Gears of War!

From what I have read the reason you hear that marketing line "The PS3 is the most powerful console" has to do with the cpu, and from what I have read the cpu is more powerful. The thing is, the xbox gpu developed by ATI was part of microsoft and ATI's dx10 co devolpment program. Basicly the 360 is DX10 capable, I think that is why Gears of War blows anything out of the water graphicly we have seen period, even on pc, as I believe it is a dx10 game. The PS3's Nvidia based Gpu is less powerful and does not support dx10. There was a thread in the console section of this forum explaining all this.

Well, probably not. Actually, not at all. :) Most cable companies have digital transmission right now, but there are a few analog channels hanging around. OTA (Over-The-Air) transmissions are mandated by the FCC in the US to move to digital by 2009, so new antennas will be needed to pick up digital OTA signals.

is it that much better than 720p? cuz my 32" is only COMPATIBLE with 1080i... i don't think it actually does real 1080i... though, i always wanted to know what that compatible resolution ends up being.... does it downgrade to like 540p or something? =/

The "Cell" processor is nothing but the most powerful hype.
If you ask me, the more they try and make consoles like the PC, the more they will also acquire the PC's flaws...which are lockups, crashes, bugs, etc.

when do we get to use them on our PCs to see how they do...

my local frys store had them for sale in bundles (at least 1000 dollars, but it includes like all the games and other accessories which if u bought separately would be the same price) since before chrismas, i just don't see the point in a ps3 being played on my ancient 20' 100 dollar walmart tv.
Well according to Maximum PC, no console can cope with DX10 (including mighty PS3).

Off-topic: Maximum PC went downhill around the same time the name was changed from 'boot'. All fluff, no real reporting, and plenty of subjective conjecture. 'Computer Power User' is much better.

The largest difference between 360 and a PS4 and this is actually kind of a big deal is the PS3 is also a blue ray dvd player. A good blue ray dvd player will run you almost 1k right now. Many adults bought these as they were able to get there kids a game system and a blue ray dvd player all in one. The 360 does not have this option and is not capable from what I have read of this option. That is why u see the price differnce in the to. Blue ray dvd quality is actully quite amazing as far as hd quality dvd. So if you are into HD movies and gaming than the PS3 is the better deal than the 360. That said I dont own either as once I began playing pc games a few years back i lost all intrest in concole games do to limited controls.

there are many sites that also did a review between ps3 vs xbox360. But my company's firewall blocked them all out (including the IGN), and this is the only one I have access to. Basically, Xbox has a more powerful GPU, and PS3has a more powerful CPU (that's my understanding). Personally, I dont think Xbox will be the winner. The reason being that they released 1 year headstart, and still did not sell more than the original Xbox (based on the length of time released to sale ratio).

Well you can always get the HD-DVD player add-on to the 360 for $200. While it is true that the total cost is now as much as a 60gb PS3, this system allows those that want HD-DVD capability to get it for the same price, and those who just want to play games to save $200, instead of having an HD drive shoved down their throats.

hah, this is an extremely good one. Maybe we should move this tread to somewhere else. It's becoming more of a discussion now.
i'll probably buy the hd-dvd expansion when i can get it for $100. :)

high definition is still a long way to go. I got the PS3 becuase i'm a PS3 fan (not going to lie about it). And I want to watch movies in blu-ray too. Also, I've already got a HD TV.

I have the HD-DVD player for my Westy 37w3. Excellent purchase, even at $200. I output 1080p via VGA to the display, and I'm pretty pleased with the results. I recommend the 360 for even casual gamers looking for HD-DVD playback.
well i'm not going nuts over the HD dvd or bluray b/c my 32" panel is a 1366x768 max resolution... basically, 720 horizontal lines is my max. :(
if i try for 1080i (which it's compatible with), i don't even really know what it's downsizing too... i've tried to read up on how the "1080i compatibility" really works, but no cigar.
maybe when i finally get a true 1080p panel, or even 1080i, i may go for high definition DVDs.

That's still HD. With a panel that small you won't see any benefit with 1080P except for displaying small text, but for just movies, 720P/1080i will look great on your tv. Even a 720P isn't exactly native res for your tv so its going to upscale it a little. If you feed it a 1080i signal your tv will just deinterlace the frames and rescale it to your native res. 1080P isn't the end all of everything. Basic rule of thumb is, if your tv is < 50", you're not going to see very much if any improvement with 1080P (unless you're using it as a computer moniter too)
Have you watched any HD programming on your tv yet?

Uh no. You just need an HDTV, not HDTV broadcast.
