I just built a new system and can't seem to get the CPU idle temp below 50 C, and I havn't even overclocked it yet.
The specs are:
AMD 1700+
Swiftech MCX370/Delta 38 Fan
Arctic Silver II
Asus A7V266-E
Antec 1040 Case w/4 80mm Fans

The Mobo temp is a steady 25 deg. Ambient room temp is 22 deg.
I removed the Heatsink, cleaned off the Thermal grease and reapplied a thinner coat. When I restarted the system it was at 37 C, but then slowly climbed back to 49 C. I'm new to this overclocking thing and want to make sure my system is working properly. Looking at other peoples systems, 50 C at idle seems extremely high. It pushes 60 under a medium load and I am nervous to push it any further without some advice.

To hot, way to hot seems as its not oc'ed...

It will be unstable @ that speed and will blow @ 95C.
Ummmm take the HSF off and re-apply it, use the AS2 but follow their instructions perfectly www.arcticsilver.com and maybe your HSF clip is backwards.... so whne you put it on although it looks like its on right (because of the clip) its infact on wrong.

Let us know how you get on.

What program are you trying to view the temperatures?

Hows the cooling in the case?

Try updating the bios and see if the bios equipped with your motherboard wasn't faulty and give you bad temperature readings.

By the way I hope your not using Asus Probe because that thing is weird, it adds 10more degree or so.

For acurate temps get a Digidoc 5, then put it on the Core!

I have the most recent bios available.
Using Motherboard Monitor 5 on WinXP.
I followed ArcticSilver's instructions, but can only see well on one side to check for proper Heatsink alignment. It looks pretty good to me. My MCX370 has clips that only grab one tab on the socket.

Make sure the clip ain't backward, use Via Hardware monitor and SiSoft, just a thought did u check to see if MBM5 labelled the temps correctly?

It labelled mt PSU as my CPU and so on, look @ Via Hardware monitor and SiSoft and match up the temps!

How hots your room and what sort of case cooling do you have? Pics?

Maybe you got to much Artic Silver II, And it's liquifying, Also, Maybe you barely put enough, Get a old credit card, And spread the artic silver around your processor.

Im oced 70 MHz, With a stock AMD Heatsink/Fan - With 3 case fans, and a Antec Case - Almost Tower -
3 Case fans in the beast, And im running at 43.5-44.5

Case Tempature: Bout 80-85

1600 XP, 1400 Athlon Thunderbird true clock, now 1470.

You think i can overclock a good 30 mhz more to make it a 1500?

Don't put it on any part of your CPU execpt the Core!

It can trap the heat and its conductive....don't wanna short out ya new chip.:eek:

Well, you actually may not be as in as bad as shape.

There was a Forum in the Intel section with a guy that has some 600 mhz processor, that was at about 80c.

That's ****ing crazy, that could melt the processor easily, i could bake cookies and ****in cakes in that kinda temp.

OK, this is where I'm at so far.
I removed the HS for the 3rd time. There was a nice even patch of AS2 on it so it looks like it was making good contact. I reapplied AS2 and put it back together checking everything twice+.
Here are my current stats:
CPU = 42C @Idle
M/B = 23C
Case = 22C
Room = 72F

I got Hmonitor by Alexander Berezkin. Numbers match exact to MBM5. Swiftech's Troubleshooting talks about inaccuracies of M/B temp sensors and recommend using Radiate to enter a correction factor. Is this a good idea? So far I can't get it to work, it won't "web update".
Maybe 42C is as good as it gets? I still think it could be better.

Ha, thats nothing

My 1.2 tbird with an alpha 6035 and decent fan run at 60 idle. Just switched from a hedgehog that idled me at your levels. It's driving me crazy.
