this is part of a conversation that i had with a friend on IM. he's in the process of building his pc and is adding components as he goes. he has all the essentials now like mobo and cpu and ram, and is using older stuff like video card and hdd till he gets money to buy new ones...he has a 1.4 athlon (not sure on mobo or hsf) but read this conv and tell me if i gave him sound advice.

RUbebop: gotten any more computer crap lately?
marc: nope...not till x-mas is over
marc: no money
marc: x-mas presents
RUbebop: yeah i know what you mean
RUbebop: how are the temps
marc: my comp is still running 58 C
RUbebop: that's hot as hell
marc: i know
marc: 130 F
RUbebop: do you know what kind of heatsink it is?
marc: note off hand
marc: i can check..and tell you later tonight
RUbebop: no big deal
RUbebop: but no overclock at all, right?
marc: nope
marc: running 1400 mhz
RUbebop: damn
RUbebop: ok
RUbebop: you need mad thermal grease
marc: i may buy a new heatsink...and some grease
RUbebop: yeah you should put that at the top of your list.

i mean that's insane heat right there! do you think he just needs some thermal grease (he doens't have any at all right now) or is something else wrong?

Thermal grease will definately help, but I think he's got something else going on, i.e., seating issues, etc.

Thermal Grease will help some but he really needs a better HSF.

If he doesn't know what kind he has, you know it is one of the crap coolermaster or OEM ones that come with it and those aren't going to do the job properly know matter how good the thermal grease is.

yeah i know how those crappy coolermasters go...actually i'm doing good 31°-32° C idle with my coolermaster 133 mhz over stock, but i want a new one. after christmas i want to get the Alpha PAL6035...but then again i have the kick-ass Delta fan that he doesn't...either way he shouldn't be running that hot.

Case Ventilation.........

A heatsink can only pull heat away from the processor....

If the case doesn't have a flow to remove the heat from the heatsink..everything is going to cook!!!!

A blow hole in the top of the case..in conjunction with a side fan pushing outside air right at the CPU heatsink is the Best way to augment even the Best cpu cooler out there!

i don't think that's his problem though...because i have no case mods done to my case and i'm very cool. (with just 1 back exhaust fan and a fan on my heatsink). plus he has an antec black server case (like alienware uses) with a couple of 80mm's in the back. so i don't think case ventilation is his problem.

He's probably running the HSF from the factory box set.
My 1G ran 130 loaded too.
Try lapping the hsf too, mine had no finishing whatsoever...just the extruded lines running through it.
And dump that worthless 'tim' tape that came with it. If you remove the hsf even once (to check if it's seating) it's now worthless. Alcohol and a swab will get it off, so will zippo fluid, but put it on the swab first, not on the processor.
That's what I did with mine and saw a 15 degree change even with that stupid hsf.

He could use a fan on the door to draft in cool air right into the cpu also. That makes a HUGE difference. Larry's right.

I'm watercooling, and it's alright now....
