Ok I was looking at a Samsung (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8131041&st=1080p+HDTV&type=product&id=1162593226223) or a Philips. Thing is the Samsung can do 1080p and is 50" where as the Philips DLP only does 720 and is 60" both are the same price. I'm looking to use this as my everyday TV plus as my computer monitor. This is all new to me so not too sure how long 720 will be around vs 1080p.

If you are going to use it as a computer monitor I would definitely go with 1080p ....720 isn't a very big desktop.

I agree both companies make good products so just go with 1080p if you want to do some gaming, computer or console, on it.

if I'm in the market looking for a new HDTV, 1080p for sure is my "requirement", for much better future proof!! you don't know when you'll get your blueray/hd dvd player, but pretty much sure you will one day!!
most people don't replace their TV as often as most other stuffs. so, think about the future is what I would suggest.

yeah, I've had my current TV since 1996. Still works great :) But I have a major itch for a nice 42" 1080p set. But I have a bigger itch to have enough money for said TV :)

i got that itch too and right now I dont have any tv. Nothing looks completely right though for the small chunk of change that I have right now.

I'm even worse off (well at least I have a TV, so maybe not), but I have NO chunk of change and an itch. I printed out a life size 42" TV just to see if it was the right size. I like to take that print out every once in a while and hold it up to the current 27" TV. I keep telling myself, "Someday..." :)
My buddy has the exact same 61", and it pwns the hell out of just about anything in that same bracket, and the 1080p works flawlessly :D The philips pales in all comparisons.
