Check it out gents... hopefully such an article will attract more people to the cause. ...and hopefully- WE can attract some of the new interest. ;)
Go to google (http://www.google.com) and search "computer power user gpu folding@home (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-35,GGGL:en&q=computer+power+user+gpu+folding%40home)" (should be first in the results)
I'm not linking directly b/c I don't wanna link directly to a subsciption advertisement. :D

You're da man harlam357. Thanks for pointing out this article. My sister in Conn. wanted to know what exactly F@H was and what millions of others and I were trying to do with our spare computer cycles. I tried to explain it to her and being kind of new to it myself, just kind of managed to trip all over myself trying to explain protien folding to her. My sister being polite, just kind of gave me the benefit of the doubt and left it at that. Now when she asks I'll be able to just point her to articles like this. I like how it says /quote/ Nothing would be cooler than being part of the team that finds the cure for Alzheimer’s and cancer. /unquote/ Amen to that.
I hope, like you, the article attracts many people to folding, especially to folding forTeam 32 .:D

EDIT: Hey got it today (Saturday) :)
Got mine a couple of days ago, always a pleasant surprise when I get home and see it sitting on the table
Read the article last night, timing couldn't have been more perfect as I'm real interested to get into Folding and I had a lot of questions. Only problem is that I'm an Nvidia guy, guess I'll have to settle for CPU folding for now.
Maybe by the time I get my G80 (next 2-3 months), I'll be able to put it to work (at least when I'm not playing) :D

hey... I think it's working! :welcome: aboard HeavyD!
Thanks for the warm welcome!! I have a quick question about my setup before I give it try. I have XP Home with multiple users setup to only log-on one at a time, no fast switching, and everyone logs off when they are done.
How will this affect folding? Do I have to stay logged on for the folding to continue?

You need a service install. Go here (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=231247) and check out Wedo's One-Click. :)
Just download the installer for your system type (single, dual, or quad) and follow the instructions. If it's a newer machine w/at least 1gb of ram, I recommend running w/-advmethods flag and bigpackets=on in the client.cfg.
For a heads up on configuring your client.cfg file, check out metapad (http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/). The config file is written in binary and will look a little weird if you open it in notepad. ;)

We should also note that you can mix and match FAH at home clients, so to speak. The CPU console client and graphical GPU client can run simultaneously and vice versa. And multiple clients of each type can be run on separate GPUs or CPU cores, for example. As an extreme example, in a system equipped with a quad-core processor and a pair of supported Radeons, four instances of the CPU client and two instances of the GPU client could be run on a single machine concurrently.
My understanding is that you have to have a free CPU to feed the GPU client. So that quad cored dual card system should only be able to run 2CPU and 2GPU clients max.

yup. it's not just bad for science, but also won't do much (could be even worst) from a ppd of view. someone should've point that out to them or forward it to Stanford and let Stanford correct them.

Since Sammit left as editor for CPU, IMO the number of mistakes have increased. I still enjoy the read every month... but I do have to say that I've caught quite a few slip-ups in the last year.

Thanks..... Just to be clear, the service install will let me fold no matter who is logged in or when no one is logged in?

Correct!
The service install only works for CPU folding tho.
GPU folding only works from the desktop console ... switching users etc will cause the gpu instance to abort i believe. a gpu instance would need to be restarted for each user session and should be ended before switching users. Desktop consoles should be closed with ctrl-c.
But CPU folding with a service install works fine in this scenario.
If its a dual core, run 1 cpu instance on a service install, and 1 gpu desktop instance to maximize production. If you find gpu folding to be a problem with multiusers, just run 2 cpu service instances on a DC.
Thanks for the info. Only have a single core at this point, but I have two of them and hope to get them both going soon. Don't have any worries about GPU at this point, I have an Nvidia 7800GT and an ATI 9200 - I don't think either one of the those will work.
Thanks again for the help :)
