I am building a MS 2003 Terminal server. I have be trying to find comparisons on these 2 processors.
The Xeon 5110 1.6Ghz 1066 FSB and 4MB Cache
The E6600 2.4GHz 1066 FSB and 4MB Cache
I am not looking to overclock, but to get some opinions.
The E6600 s $100 more. To me that looks worth it. Is there something I should know about the Xeon that makes it better?
Also looking at WD740 Raptors.

Well the xeon is socket 771, while the E6600 is socket 775. Xeon requires FB-Dimms, while the E6600 requires DDR2. Xeon is SMP capable, I.E. you can run 2 in a dual socket motherboard. While no matter how hard you try you can only run one E6600.
If you think in the future you might need to run 2 CPu's, I.E. go quad(2x2) or octo(4x2) cores/cpus. Go with the xeon else, the E6600 will be faster, since its clocked faster.

Also, even though a lot of people aren't keen on overclocking servers much, it is perfectly possible to get a moderate but totally stable 24/7 overclock on any C2D in any enthusiast board, but AFAIK it would be pretty tricky to do with a 771 system. It should be easy to have that e6600 doing 2.9Ghz on fairly basic cooling with rock solid stability, and depending upon the kind of workload it gets that would probably not be too far behind 2 of the Xeon 5110s.

there are plenty of people on 2CPU fourm getting 3.4ish ghz on woodcrest CPU's.. it just takes alot more skill

A good compromise would be the E6300. It's about the same price as the Xenon, but faster, and Socket 775. Even better is the E6400, but it costs ~$40 more.
Raptors are worth it. The speed can easily be noticed. The 74 is on sale right not at NewEgg.

Trust me dont comprimise with the E6300, I am running the E6600 and its running at 3.2GHz, and at 20 degrees C on an air cooled system, I have been reading it can go alot higher then I currently have it set to.

Yeah but 2.9 on an E6600 in an enthusiast board is basically a 'free' overclock. If you are going through the bother of possibly tweaking a raid array and a server OS, then you might not want to waste time on the rest of your hardware.

yes its a free overclock.. I was just pointing out that its not impossible.
