A friend of mine came over today with a crossover cable, but we cant get the two comp to see each other. I set my ip at 192.168.0.1 and his is 192.168.0.2. Subnet masks are both 255.255.255.0. I am running win2k, he has XP. Windows detects a connection, the little connection icon in the task bar comes up, but i cant see him, cant ping him, and same the other way. Theres probably a setting i missed that i need to set, but if someone could walk me through it that would be great.

You have to share something in order to see the other guy. Go to my computer and right click on a harddrive and go to sharing and then share it. This should let u see each other on the network. what protocols are you using? Tcp/ip?

We both have files shared, and yah, where using tcp/ip.
We cant even ping each other, but he can see my server in a halflife game.

both the workgroups are set to workgroup. That shouldnt effect a ping command though, and that alwasy says "request timed out"

personaly i think ms file and printer sharing is unreliable. to check you link i would use a cool program called vcm if there is a tcp/ip link betwen your comps it will work. when you add a user normally it shows users on the network otherwise you can just enter the ip of the other user and if there is a conection it will show him as being online.

If you can't ping then theres no way filesharing would even be working, so don't bother checking those settings.
All you should have to set it the ip and subnetmask, and if the icon goes away then I'd bet the cable is fine. You might want to check to make sure it's wired correctly:
Just make sure pins 1&2 on one end connect to 3&6 on the other, and viceversa.

We were actually able to connect in counterstrike, but thats it. Didnt make any sence, the connection was there, but windows couldnt see it.
Anyone got a good tutorial for creating a crossover cable?
Which wires do you change?
