well if you have another comp hooked up to the router you should be able to access it but if the only comp you have is the one your messing with i dont know how to get a default gateway.
if you have another comp hooked to the router you can look on it internet protical proteies and it should show you and then you oculd put it in manully on the other comp. these the only ways i know how to do that but i imagin some one esle can help you if this doesnt work for you

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Does this help?
If not check the router to make sure it is serving the gateway via DHCP. Any other machines connecting to this router and getting IP/gateway via DHCP?

I've had the same thing happen to me. I'd rule out the networking hardware by completely reseting your router and modem and then going through the modems built in "wizard". Also, go into your Wireless Network Connection Properties and click on the Wireless Networks tab. Check the box that says "Use Windows to manage my wireless network settings".

You need to go into the router configuration page and make sure DHCP is set to auto. What router do you have?

It has nothing to do with the router. I called linksys tech support and i was told that the operating system was coppupted. can that really happen?

What err does it say when it cannot complete? My guess would be that your networking card is not set to DHCP. Go thru the networking properties of that connection then check the properties to TCP/IP. Make sure DHCP and DNS are set to auto. If that dosent work unistall and reinstall the drivers for your networking card. And check to make sure your DHCP is enabled again. Then hit up a /release and /renew.

yea ive tried doing that when i get home, ill try doing that again and seeing what error messege i get. i i know is i cant go to the cmd at type ipconfig /renew, or release. I also went to the zero confiuration tool and it still doesnt assign me and IP address. Its on DHCP but why do i have a private IP address but when i try to connect to the internet, it say no ip address or subnet. IP 0,0,0,0 subnet 0,0,0,0. I was told that my OS is corrupted. how could that be possible really?

First, make sure windows is set to configure your wireless settings and not whatever software that came with the drivers of your card. Do this by right clicking your wireless adapter in network places, going to properties, wireless networks tab and make sure that box on the top is checked.
Next, verify that you can see your wireless routers signal and that you are connected to the access point, by clicking the View Wireless Networks button. Next make sure Obtain IP address automatically is set and the DNS server is set likewise, in the TCP/IP properties. Then do an ipconfig /all and see if there's an IP address assigned to your wireless adapter.
If you have windows firewall enabled, it may be whats preventing you from communicating with your router. If this is the case, the icon of your wireless adapter will have a lock on it and it will say Firewalled. You can disable windows firewall in Admin. Tools, services, find Windows Firewall/ICS, Stop the process and set startup type to disabled.

I made sure those worked the thing im not sure about is the wireless tab. maybe its not checked im not completely sure. This wont interfere with the netwok driver i downloaded which came with the mobo right. no there not wireless that wired drivers? should i ininstall them?

Tech support is trained to tell you that. They will tell you anything to avoid admitting any of their products have problems
What TempliNocturnus said are good steps to follow. If it's possible, try a wired connection to the router and see if you can get through. If if works while you are wired up, that will help us in troubleshooting.

I would still bet it was the drivers and not windows that gave you the problems. I actually have the same problem at home right now, gonna reinstall the drivers and it should work.
And like stated above, if there is a chance its not them they will say it is 100% not their fault.
