View Full Version : Defrag software...
What defrag software are you huys using? Alot of the programs I've tried seem pretty bloated. I want something simple and fast, any recomendations?

What have you tried?
There is a huge gap of what people think is bloated software (I think firefox is bloated for my purposes currently for instance)
I use PerfectDisk. It's fairly quick and seems to do a good job. I set it to defrag every week so I don't have to worry about it.
I use Diskeeper 10. Very very fast ;)

Use PerfectDisk here. Good program.

Diskeeper 2007 [11]
is perfect to get it taken care of us
Diskeeper 9 here. It does what it's supposed to so I never saw a reason to upgrade.
I've used O&O, Perfectdisk [9?], Diskeeper 2007, and perhaps one other that I can't think of. O&O was the closest to what I was looking for, but still wan't quite it.

i reformat windows way before i would ever need to defrag, but I would use perfectdisk or just the windows one.

If I remember correctly the Windows Defrag program is just a stripped down version of Diskeeper. How often do you reformat? I reformat about every 4 months and still need to defrag.........

No way.
IIRC Just installing windows causes fragmentation. (Unless you are using images).
I defrag minimum once a week

reimaging on a matrix raid array would almost be faster LOL :p
IIRC Epox did his in 15min.. that pretty quick but it was a minimal image.
i use diskeeper. I use the "set it and forget it" method, so it pretty much defragments every night.
I also use linux which never needs defragmenting. :)
I use PerfectDisk, and like O&O as well. Both are very good products :) My only complaint with PerfectDisk is that it's scheduling service can start to suck up memory if left open for long periods of time.

Tell that to my linux box, would ya? :D Don't know about ext3, but my ReiserFS partition gets a bit on the fragmented side between compiles, portage syncs, and general usage. It's hard to say since I've yet to find any good apps, but ReiserFS seems to fragment at about the same rate as NTFS.

oh about every 3 weeks or so, on my system it takes about 10 minutes to install everything and I love a fresh system. so i do it quite frequently.
as to linux not needed to be defragmented, that really depends, if you are running a single user box then the same follows with windows. Files get moved around and to get better performance its better for them to be together or allighned. if the system(not just Linux, actually all) is a server then a defrag could actually hurt performance, as a server serving many clients is already gathering data from all around the place. so there is actually a much better chance that the data will be gathered faster in a random pattern than in a sequential order.
all of this depends on the person thogh, in general Reiser, ext2, ext3 dont generally need it.

how bout XFS. I use ext3 on my server and XFS on my dtop.

O&O here. Complete/NAME is my favorite defrag option. Speeds up the system quite well. I just schedule it to defrag all 3 of my partitions and then shut down, that way I know my computer will be off after I fall asleep :)
Still want to try some of the other programs out there, just to see the competition.

Why do the defrag programs take up so much memory? Just the engine for O&O was 21 mb and the engine for Diskeeper was 28 mb. I really don't like that idea, especially since I run the programs manually and do not want the stuff running all the time. Is there a way to set these up so that the engine starts when I open the program and stops when I exit the program?

i think you would have to start and stop the service manually
