View Full Version : Video for Solaris?

I'm currently installing Solaris, just so I can play around with it. I have a 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 in the system, I'm wondering which video option is best suited to the OS. 3DFX cards aren't in the list. I'd like a 1024X768 desktop, but without the panning (panning screws me up a little).

does it use X?

I'm sure the card is supported, it's just the 3d acceleration might not be. I'm not very familiar with solaris because it costs so damn much.

Yea, I'm with Polypill. I'm sure there's some form of 2D support, perhaps uber-basic, but most likely no hardware 3D support.

And pengiunfreak probably doesn't know what solaris is.

penguinfreak:
yes, it uses X.

If it was just an X related problem I thought that I might be able to help. Maybe try the linux sources for the VGA card drivers (i'm not sure how close linux and solaris are. *goes back to linux related stuff*

It should support generic VGA for text mode. Solaris uses CDE and I'm not sure how to configure. Latest versions of Sol should come with X so you can google "solaris+x+3dfx"

CDE is just a window manager/desktop environment for X, not a replacement for X.

stuff CDE, try KDE or GNOME.

Hey Polypill!

Go to Sun and to some navigating. you can download SUN Soleris 8 for free! you only need to pay if you need support for more then 8 processors (or something like that) I can't remember what it's called off hand but they offer it for $75 mailed, and if you read the fine print and hit a few links you can download it for free.

Give it a try, I plan to when I have some time.

Yep, that's how I got it. Thanks for all the tips guys. Unfortunately it looks like I'm stuck with the generic 800 X 600 VGA. I wanted to see what the GUI looked like because the last time I touched Unix was in about 88' - 90' or there about's, no GUI's. All the stuff I'm doing is run from a command prompt so it's not really a big deal. Thanks again.

That's not entirely true. It's hard to explain. Maybe I'll find an expert that will convince you otherwise.

You see, CDE for X is an imitation of CDE for Solaris.

Ok, plot thickens...
My brother installed it, and it saw his card. He's got the Voodoo 3 3000. I've got the Voodoo 3 2000. I'm trying to figure out the difference. It's got the same GPU.

So... Sun doesn't provide an X Window System for Solaris? If you are running CDE, you can only run CDE apps, no X11 apps? Any network transparency, or is it a total redesign? I guess its worse than X?
