Anyone know anything about routers?
I have a Netgear RT314 hooked up to cable.
I was told that I shouldn't run Zonealarm because it will interfere with the operation of the router.
Do I need to run a firewall with the router?
yes you should, some routers do have firewalling capabilities, ie packet filtering, port control, montering, etc
generally support personal are afraid of firewalls because the average person cant configure them and when mis configured they will screw up tcp/udp/etc
i run two firewalls, one for general old known stuff (ie let it up date someones else definitions, like sub7, netbus)and one to monitor all port/app activity and keep a running log of what is going across my system.
i run cable and dsl static and dynamic, depending if i want to reconfigure my gateway after the weelky liscence renewall bs, or not, and i get probes/scans almost hourly. sometimes a bust them it depends how frequent and what it is often people dont even know they are replecating . if nothing else a firewall will open your eyes.
i dont know about zone alarm, dont like even though it is one of the better ones, hard to fool, but i would guess that it could be configured to let in and out what is needed, probably by default, check their web page

well usually routers have built in firewalls as turd said. Otherwise you can also use software based firewalls like zonealarm. WinXP even has built in firewall capabilties. But really the only reason you need a firewall is to keep people from accessing your network. So if u wanna setup a server or something a firewall maybe unnecessary :D

I have a static hook up to the ISP.
The problem I am having is that my ISP changed their DNS on 11/30, I suppose it has something to do with Cox, and my Zonealarm is rejecting it when I try to get online.
I uninstalled/ reinstalled Zone to no avail. So I called Netgear toll free help, they said that the firewall would interfere with the router and I don't have to use one anyway.
I do have port blocking in this router.
yes, really its more of a geek thing with me, i know people that are all over the net, irc, icq etc and have never used a firewall, and have never had a prob, i would think the most danger on a home static system would be to just have it incorectly configured, like leaving file sharing open, someone maps your drive , etc check out zone alarm i would bet u could configure it to work with that router,, also ur prob might be that u are not getting a good uninstall which causes zonealarm to use its old ruleset.
try uninstalling it then going to your drive and deleting any folder left behind from zonealarm, go into your reg under localmachine software and delete the zone alarm folder then reinstall and see what u get
i think net gear support is just smart enough to not get involved with helping u configure 3rd party software which is "interfering" with otherwise functioning product
