Hello Folks,
I need to upgrade my cpu but not sure what I can upgrade to, I have a Pentium 233mhx(MMX) overclocked to 266mhx. It is a socket 7 and I believe I have a Gemlight motherboard. What cpu can I upgrade too???? I was told 400mhx but not sure. And if I can upgrade where would I get one......remembering I live in CANADA!!!! If anyone has a cpu I can upgrade too I would be willing to purchase it. Any help would be great....

for socket 7 board, u might have to try amd chip. k6-3 or k6-2, i believe. u can run up to 400 to 500( ? ) with that setup.
i am not sure if intel make anything higher then 233 with socket 7 chip.
hope it help

Dropout is correct. If you insist on using that mobo, you'll have to go with an AMD, but first you'll need to find out for sure if that mobo will support the CPU you plan on upgrading to.

What other types of motherboards can I upgrade to?

now u are talking some fun now. :)
good old intel 440bx board---------> celron, pentium II, pentium III,
some via 133 board ----------------> celeron, pentium II, pentium III.
with celeron cpu, u can run up to 1 gig. but they are a bit slower then pentium III when compare at the same clock speed.
with pentium II, u can upgrade to 500 Mhz i believe.
with the pentium III, u can run 1.1 and o/c to 1.5 (saw it from anadtech)
or the newer i815ep board
abit st6, asus have one too but not so popular in here :)
with the newer i815ep board, u can put in the new pIII or tualatin chip. this new chip is faster then the old pIII and can oc at higher speed. example. celeron-t can run at 1600.
as for pentium IV. i have not done any research on it yet.
but i am sure people here will show u the light :)
what come down to, is how much u want to spend, and what kind
of work, program u want your pc to run at.
have fun

Another thing you might not of considered if you decide to upgrade to a newer motherboard is that you'll have to get a newer style ATX case and power supply too. Also, if your old motherboard using the 72 pin sticks of memory, you'll probably have to get different RAM.

Heh stick some cash in your back pocket its Christmas!
Yes what bayboy said is correct.
I would recommend a Abit ST6 which is a Tualatin ready board, so you can get a Celeron 850 and always upgrade to a Tualatin sometime in the future.
While ram is cheap I'm guessing it's not a problem. PSU is a definite buy!
A new case is needed with some case fans and get a decent heatsink, I would suggest one from the main page "Socket A/370 Recommendations."
Good luck picking it out.

If i were you, i'd just ****ing Overclock it until it burns out.
It's only a 233 chip, Overclock it to about... 350
Put a new heatsink on, Also get a 120mm Fan for cooling, make sure your side case is on for Air Flow..
Hahaha, Lord does have a point, but realistically, 350 MHz is probably not possible except in extremely rare situations. That's really pushing the processor way past it's limits. If you have a 75 FSB setting on the motherboard then 300 might be within reach if you use a 4X multiplier and excellent cooling.
Bah I'd just sell it off Ebay for a good heatsink/fan price! So you have some good cooling with the new computer.

I have clocked the machine to 266mhx, how would I get it to 300mhx? How do I change the multiplier to get this speed. I have a heat sink fan and I just installed a large case fan, my temp is 32 degrees right now.
