Chawken said a few days ago that it is 28 days, I would not hold for more than a week unless you absolutly have to.

I'm not even sure if they consider it "lost" anymore. As all work units are sent out at least twice it doesn't make too much difference how long it takes to return.

Work units can be sent out multiple times to different people, and everybody that returns it gets credit. I'm not sure about the number of days before it's considered dead though. It may be that if it was sent to one person and hasn't been returned for 28 days it goes out again, or if it was sent to several members and hasn't been seen it is retired. I think it's safe to assume you could take nearly a month to finish one and you would get credit.
