I have heard that u can play DVD's with a normal CDROM drive.

Is it true?

Well, none of mine do. But my DVD drive reads CDROMs and music CDs.

I do not believe that this is true as if this was the case why would the manufacturers sell 'two' completely different drives.

No a cd player will not play a cd. However you can rip and encode a dvd (much as you would a wav file to mp3) into a vcd (or video cd) wich CAN be played in your cd player or even some newer home dvd players
