View Full Version : Gathering Data NOW
Some of you may remember my post about collecting processor specs and comparing them etc. Well here is the result. BrianCapps has offered to sort out the database, all we need is.. the data!
So if you want to help out, please post:
1) (Processor core type), type, speed in MHz, bus speed
2) SiSoft sandra - both CPU benchmarks and both CPU MM benchmarks
3)3Dmark 2001 score
4)VGA chip, memory, (mem speeds)
5) Chipset, Mobo name, (revision), (BIOS)
6) RAM type, speed, (maufacturer)
The ones in brackets aren't so important. So my entry is:
Duron (spitfire) 650MHz, 100MHz
CPU MM FP - xxx Int - xxx, CPU MIPS - xxx CPU FLOPS - xxx
3dmark2001 - 1830
GeForce 2 MX, 32MB, defaukt speeds
VIA KT133 on Jetway 663 AS Pro, BIOS A10
384MB (micron) PC133 RAM
I will need at least 30-50 entries to make the database worthwhile. Closing date for entries is 1st March 2002.
(PS if anyone bumps this up, could they perhaps add the running total to their post please?)

Please, if you can help post your specs.
How about creating a script that will run Sandra and save all results into a formatted txt file? Then many of them can be assembled into one database effortlessly, and it will be much more interesting to analyze than just a few fields.
How would you do that?
If you could let me know that would be a big help
How about reading the sandra help file ;)

You can add your HSF data if you want, if it makes you feel better :D but it will probably not be added to the database.
Please, if you could just take 10mins to help out. It won't be worthwhile with only 12 results. 20 is an abosulte minimum.

C'mon guys and gals!
PenguinFreak and BrianCapps are trying to make a database here......
Can anyone else help them out? Surely there must be more than 12 of our 12,000+ members willing to shed some info on their systems? Bragging rights at least?
I don't recall seeing any moderators helping out either.........;)
C'mon Mr B! That XP1800 must be worth submitting! And Mr "Intel 'till the day I die" Shadow - what about yours? And as for the rest of you lazy lazy people.....get your SANDRA out!
(Oh, by the way guys - my memory has got faster....now CAS 2 instead of 2.5!)
Thanks reddeathdrinker!

I'm not sure why but when i run Sandra (not retail, just downloaded), it says that my 1.4 Athlon is slower than a 1GHz! What is up with that? If you can help out, I'll do my best to remember. I'm @ work until midnight tonight.

Penguin: how are you going to analyze this heterogeneous data? I've very interested in what you can come up with ;)
I may need to sift through it, but the plan is to have a database of systems so that people can see what kind of performance boost they can get from upgrades ie what is the diff between a 1.2Tbird and a 1.2/P4, or will that 66MHz make any difference.

I may be the only P4 person to reply so here is my latest scores as of tonight.
NOTE: I just bought this P4 1.8 ghz last week for $190 and i'm using only stock heatsink/fan and voltage of 1.7!
Specs:
Motherboard: ASUS P4T
CPU : P4 1.8 @ 2070 (115 fsb)
Memory : 256M Samsung PC800 RDRAM
Video : ASUS V7700 Geforce II GTS
First 3dmark2001 score @ default video card 200/333 : 4048
Second 3dmark2001 score with video card clocked to 218/420 : 4730
CPU Benchmark:
3991 MIPS
1078/2564 MFLOPS
CPU Multimedia :
Integer 8229
Floating point 10141
I'm sure this chip will go over 2200 with watercooling to which my peltiers are currently burnt so that'll have to wait.
Hope this brings a little excitement to you comparisons!

I think that some people are intimidated by the computers that are being posted. They may be afraid to post thier specs for they may be not up to par with the others here. I'm not saying this is the reason but so far noone has made fun of each others systems specs and scores. Thats a good thing!

By the way are you making a data base online that we'll be able to view ?

And I think that most people just realise how useless this poll is ;)
The data can't be analyzed in any way; and even if it was, what is being asked can't produce any results that are unpredictable or of any real interest.

And why I posted my second system.
This is really a comparison chart. It will be so that people can see the possible effects of overclocking/upgrading CPU/RAM/Graphics.
I hoped that posting in the AMD and Intel sections would help :)
Yes, it will be a database accessable online. BrianCapps is working on the database, I'll tidy up the webpage frontend. The database will replace my current site at www.computeraddict.fsnet.co.uk
The site will not have any adverts on it, apart from a link to ww.overclockers.com
There is no need to be intimidated. No names will be next to PCs in the final database. As my Biology teacher hammered into me for three years - ensure a large sample size for a reliable experiment. Thats why I am ideally looking for about 50-100 PCs. That shouldn't be hard with 12000 members in this site, say 2500 active.
As my Biology teacher hammered into me for three years - ensure a large sample size for a reliable experiment.
And that's the whole point, there is absolutely nothing to test or prove in this data, so sample size is irrelevant. Sorry if it seems I'm getting on your case, just trying at least to make something useful of this thing.
For beginners what really should of been asked for example is:
Stock cpu speed + sandra score
Overclocked cpu speed + sandra score
Now you will be at least able to compile which CPU's have a better real % performance increase vs. % increase in MHZ.
But this is pointless also because the CPU score results can be predicted mathematically very accurately so the gathered results would not to be of much interest.
Now an overall test of the system performance before and after the overclock would be interesting, and there are numbers that can be worked with.
Look at the attached PDF, very relevant, maybe it'll give you some good ideas ;)
I plan to gather all the raw data now and sort it out later. I understand where you are coming from though.

LJ5L, if you don't like the idea, fine. Don't participate. But don't slam him because YOU don't like it. I see it differently and would like to see a sucessful database set up.
I'll move it around the various forums to get more exposure. PM me if it gets low or needs to be moved.

Hi all, new to the forums, and have been browsing for some cooling tips, but figured I'd add my system info to the list you're compiling here along with my results.
Note 1: All listed configurations have been tested using SiSoft Sandra's Burn-in wizard running continuously for 4 hours, followed up by looping 3DMark 2001 for an additional 2 hours for a total of 6 hours continuous testing to ensure stability. I was able to get the FSB up to 150 (300) and the machine *seemed* stable, however it did not like cold booting (hitting the reset button after turning the machine on would cause it to boot normally, at which point it would run fine.) Because of this, I don't consider the 150 FSB setting to be 100% stable so I will not post the results of the testing at that setting. Core voltage is at 1.87 for all listed configurations.
Note 2: I included the FPS on the Nature test (from 3DMark 2001) as this was the one test that scored the lowest in the FPS category. My ultimate goal for this overclock was to attain an average of 30fps or better for that test since my initial 'default configuration' test results showed the framerate to be below the magic 30 number.
Listed test results are for the system using the (a) default configuration, (b) the highest 'safe and stable' FSB setting, and (c) the highest 'safe and stable' FSB along with a video core and memory OC'd.

Thanks for the welcome! :D
As for the above-listed test results, well I guess you could say I'm still testing. ;) After reading a few articles that I had overlooked previously on Tom's Hardware, I came to the assumption that *most* Athlon T-Bird 1.2's are supposedly factory unlocked. Deciding to test the theory, I disabled ADR (auto detect ratio) on my mainboard and attempted to up the multiplier. The default multiplier on the chip is at 9x (it's a 266 FSB T-Bird) which I changed the settings for on my mainboard. Got it up to 10.5x however I had to scale the FSB down to 137 from the 148 I was running it at on 9x in order to be stable. It's currently running at around 1.44Ghz and I got a very slight boost in my 3DMark scores over what I was running previously and a pretty good-sized boost in my Sandra CPU and CPU MM results (the memory actually went down a little from test "c", as I expected it would with the lower FSB.) This configuration hasn't been tested quite as thoroughly as the previous ones, but here's the updated results. (Note: WCPUID shows the multiplier at 10.5x, as set on the mainboard. I *believe* this confirms that the multiplier is already unlocked.)

As you can plainly see, the 3DMark 2001 shows a slight improvement, although it definitely falls within the application's margin of error, so for all intents and purposes, the 3DMark score is identical in Test Results C and D. I haven't had enough time to test this configuration as thoroughly as the previous ones. So far I've only run Sandra's Burn-In for 2 hours, and 3DMark for 1 hour, however it's been very stable thus-far.
One thing is certain though. This is as high as I can get this thing to run. Any higher FSB or multiplier settings will cause crashes. Still, 1.44 from a 1.2 isn't too bad, is it?
(Edited because there is no letter "t" in the word "confirm") :p
Wow!
4 sets of results from 1 PC - thanks georget!
Any PC specs would be brill. Even if you have a P133 that 3Dmark2001 won't run on, its Ok just to post just sandra scores, although I would prefer 3dmark scores as well (even only 10 3dmarks is still something that can be added to the dbase!)
I am especially interested in Duron Morgan and Athlon XP scores to compare with Tualatin and P4 CPUs, but any CPU is Ok. If you feel embarassed about your system just PM the spec to me and I'll post it for you anonomously.

What about things like Directx version, Windows OS, and drivers? All of these can make a very significant impact on 3dmark2001 scores (not sure if OS really makes that much of a difference for softsandra, tho).
(im at school now but will post scores later tonight or tomorrow morning)

If you are running 3dmark2001 you need DirectX 8, and for 3dmark2001 se v8.1
We can safely assume that directx is version 8 and up. A good idea tho :D
Windows OS would be nice but not essential.
BUMP. Anyone..please?
Surely there are more Intel users who would like to show off thier systems :D
Construction has began...but its not oo late to add your scores. Deadline is 26th March (before the school easter holidays :D)
