May not look like much but it was a lot of work. I etched them by hand with a utility knife. Drew the flames and made a template out of cardboard - then taped it to the window, drew it in sharpie - then I took it off and began etching with the knife. lemme know what you think guys.

Take this as constructive critiscm. You need to have a bit more variety to look like flames. To be honest, it looks more like tentacles.....

As for the actual work? Looks superb!

i agree with shard.

flames need more variety...needs to be more random.

But either way, anyone who looks at it will know its flames. and thats DAMN good since you did it by hand. hell, i'v seen worse professional etching! Good job man. hope you continue doing this. would love to see you do more of this.

Thanks on the comments and criticism. The flames may not look likie real ones, but I was more going for the look of tribal flames - which dont look real nor are they supposed to.

Ahh that does make alot more sense. But at the same time, tribal is supposed to be organic ;)

Looking pretty good, although I'm really not a fan of the case.

Still, great work for being done by hand.

I think you did a fine job on that etching. Now if it were me I would lightly paint them with yellow and red UV paint and add a UV cathode.

Thats a good job, but its a repeating pattern. Should have mixed it up a bit. But hey IT IS NICE. I couldnt do etching as of right now.

Flames are way overdone, it would be nice to see something unique.

Ok- heres the DIY.

1. First, you'll need some kind of substance that can be easily cut with a knife yet ridgid enough to hold a design. I used the heavy cardboard from the back of a looseleaf notebook (the kind that are bound at the top).

2.First, you draw your design on the cardboard with a pencil - so you can correct mistakes.

3.You then go over it with a sharpie.

4.Then you cut out your design with a sharp knife - the sharper the better. You can also use a scissors, although intricate designs do not lend them self to being cut with them.

5.You then duct tape up your new template out of cardboard. (Also, don't use corrugated cardboard as it doesn't tend to tace well with an etching tool and does not hold sharp edges under pressure.)

6.Next, using a very sharp pointed tool you follow the design template, cutting the outline into the surface (lexan, polycarb, plexi, etc).

7.Then if you want, you shade in the design for additional dimension using one of those utility knifes that you can break off. If you made a deep enough trench the first time you cut the outline, the knife should drop in it and stop rather than going outside the design. The utility knife should provide a wide enough edge to shade alot of material at a time while being narrow enough to avoid going outside your design. I suppose you could also tape outside you design to protect against going outside your design - although if you are using a sharp tool it will not impede it much. Anyhow, any more questions? Just post them here or PM me.

Are there any chemicals that can "eat" the acrylic for that frosted look?

I know when I spill acetone onto acrylic the acetone goes into the acryilc leaving it with that frosted glass look.

Im sure thare are other chemicals that you could use just like acetone and then you can just brush it on like paint. A lot less work...

I know there is a liquid plexi and lexan etcher that you can buy. I think McMaster sells it.

As you can see I cut the mesh out of the two drivebays that didnt have fans behind them and mounted diamodplate in the empty frames. Also, I cut a piece of diamonplate to set in the tray on the top. Let me know what you think. Heres a closeup: http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/8155/picture055xr9.jpg
