Hi,

I just purchased a completely new rig, which includes an XP1600+ and a Termaltake Dragon Orb 3.

I'm new to AMD processors (last PC I built some years ago was a Celery 300a) so want some advice before fitting this mother of a fan... In hindsight I'm not sure whether its a bit overkill (it weights a tonne!) for my system, but anyway, I've bought it now.

I got some silver compound (though it came with silicon gel stuff) but I didn't get a Shim. Having done a bit more reading I thinkn I need to go and get a shim when I pick the CPU up on Tuesday. Sound sensible?

Is there a noddy's guide to installing some of these monster HS&F on the AMD CPU's? I've read loads of posts whereby people have crushed them and I'm actually getting quite concerned about fitting mine! :D

Any top tips? Ive read the beginners guide posted on this site, but it looks a bit out of date...

Cheers for any help!

Got the same HSF. Make sure that the base is smooth before you mount it. I had some machining marks on mine so a little lapping would do some good. The Main page of this site has a few articles on how to do it. I do not think shims are a good idea. Don't hold the top part, the fan cage, as it will easily deform into the fan. DO NOT rock that into place or you will chip/crack the core. You should be able to hook the rear clip to all three lugs with the HSF squarely on the CPU & then use a flat head screw driver to fit the front clip. Make sure that the screw driver fits exactly into the front clip or it will slip & then you can buy a new MoBo after that. Mount it outside of the case.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!!
.....and to the addiction:eek:

Cheers sonny, that's the kind of info I was after :)

I do have a few machine marks (actually, they look like the rings on a tree, but they're seriously small so I really don't know if it will make much difference?).

Also, I'm not sure I have the tools around here (or can get them easily) to do the lapping part (I live in Finland)... however, I will check out a h/w store here tomorrow if I can :D

You guys are already responsible for about 400 UKP worth of my spending yesterday, so the addictions are already kicking in :)

Cheers!

lapping may shave off a couple of degrees, and all you need is some sandpaper, and water (300grit, 400grit, 600grit, 800grit) should

Cheers! The "tree rings":D is enough to help chip off a corner on the core. It happened to me DOH!!!!! but it's still running. If you want to take the chance:beer:

All you need for lapping is sandpaper & a piece of glass. Need more help? Post a new thread on how to lapp & you will get a ton of suggestions:eek:

Hmm..... Finland? I heard some guys in your country did some LN2 cooling to get 2GHz on their AMD chips. Are you a FI fan? What's the real reason Mika quit?

Sounds nasty... They look soooo tiny though! I will do a spot of research on the lapping side of things and post up if I get stuck. Thanks for the pointers. Only problem for me is getting the materials.

I might live in Finland, but I'm as English as they come :) Moved here a month ago and haven't looked back since... As for Mika, I think thats just cos he's crap now :D

(of course, the Finn's would tell you its all because he has a family etc ... :))

Cheers for the pointers!
