View Full Version : Blue Orb....Junk or not??
Has anyone else had one of these get real noisy after a few months?
I put my original chipset cooler back in because I was concerned that the BLORB would soon fail.
Is the Crystal Orb much better and where can it be purchased?
Remove the fan from the heatsink & pull the sticker off the back. Drop some oil in there & your good to go.
It isn't junk.
Its just poorly made. Reason?
The parts aren't really connected together and the surface which touches the chip isn't flat its really uneven.
Once you begin to lap it you'll see a huge difference and it'll run way better.
The crystal orb and the blue orb are slightly the same thing just a 1 degree difference.
All the blorb requires is a good lap and its a 9/10 product.
Well, I did lap it...spent nearly an hour lapping the darn thing.
But, that has nothing to do with the problem.
It ran fine for about 2 months and started getting noisy.
And I did put some oil in it but I haven't put it back in since.
Besides, what good is ANY cooling fan if you have to oil it every few months.....rediculous!!!
The EXTERNAL blower I use for cooling is made with oil ports in it and I knew before I got it that oiling it was a requirement. But a fan mounted inside the case should not need to be oiled.
I M H O :D

and posably some solder in between the bottem and the fins. however a old cpu cooler such as a socket 7 one would do alot better
I don't like the BLORB. Had one on my Geforce, but I had to run it at 5V to get acceptable noise. On 12V it caused much vibration and was the single loudest component in my box. Also it's three piece construction (not two; you have the fins, the part with the mounting holes and a middle "slug") is not a good solution. An old 486 cooler give much better results with less noise.
