encoding program?

I'm looking for some good encoding software with batch encoding that can support pretty much any input file format to pretty much anything else.

i have the whole southpark collection and id like to go from a wide range of formats to a single format of all same sized widescreen good quality files.

then eventually using some dvd authoring and dvd-shrink and burn it all (eventualy)

but i mostly want to resize and do some filtering and boost up the res.

Virtualdubmod (just add codecs) for video and besweet for audio.

i have had good / mixed experiences with GX Transcoder
my computer's very old so that could be why
