HI everybody..i just neer ur advice. I'm a newbie to all the overclocking stuff.
First off i have a p4 1.3 i want to overclock it, but by how much should i do it. By overclocking it, i dont want to add like 10 fans a coolant sytem and all that ****.. I just want a simple overclock. I have 2 fans running thourgh my comp so that should help with the heat.
i'm using a p4ita atx mainbord ..i dunno if that matters
..so if u guys can..plz give me ur advice in overclocking
Yes the motherboard does matter and is absolutely critical to overclocking. You need to research your manual and find out if your motherboard has adjustable FSB settings. I'm not familar with the motherboard you listed, but chances are that you might NOT be able to overclock it.
Is it a branded computer or did you buy it on a full computer store?
Check in your bios or manual if you change the FSB.
Until then we can't help you until you finish this step.

OKAY I DID IT!!!
i overclocked my fsb to 115 on my p4 1.3
no it running at 1.49 ...should i do more??
only thing..i checked my cpu temp and it is 45.5 C ..i dunno but it seems fairly high to me..The only thing is that my comp has been running for like 15 hours straight..(i just overclocked it right now) so i dunno if that affect the overclock in many ways. I usully dont turn on my comp for this long but was DL a big ass movie, and this morning i forgot to turn it off.

Yeah, that temp is a bit high... if you're using the stock heatsink cooler that might be one cause... proper ventilation of your case could also be an issue... typically have the front lower fan bringing air into the case and a powerful fan blowing air out the back/top...
Try downloading:
CPUBurn
3dMark 2001
Prime95
Run them all at once and then what is your temperatures?
Case fans are needed probably and the stock heatsink and fan sucks I wouldn't recommend anymore you shouldn't exceed 45-50 Celius full load.
Full load meaning programs putting your computer under 100% usage/stress.

You might want to check out some heatsink reviews some are relatively inexpencive and quite good maybe somebody can recomend a good heatsink?
Cooling will give you the most bang for the buck, and it would help to invest in some good thermal compound. I have been using Arctic Silver thermal compound and it droped my cpu temps by 7degrees C, but there is some newer versions on the market than what I have.
In the radio world they say that your antenna is half of your radio, and in overclocking cooling is half the battle.
You should be able to get a really great h.s./fan for $50.00 or less.
intel socket 423/478 heatsinks are the same

No they arent. PGA-423 and mPGA-478 are different socket types for Pentium 4s. Each requires a different heatsink. IE, a heatsink for a s423 wont work on an s478.
Oh, and he has a P4 1.3, and i think those only came as s423.
Antman is correct, the heatsinks for socket 423 and 478 are different because they mount totally different. He is also correct about the 1.3 gig P-4 being only available in the socket 423 flavor.

I should be a senior member :/ . This makes me think back to the days of the Socket 3. 4, etc etc Pentiums....

K basically, what you do when overclocking, is gradually increase your FSB, until your idle temperature (idle means nothing is running) is about 100F. That is where the P4 starts underclocking itself. You might want to invest in some Arctic Alumina Thermal Interface Material, and a new heatsink. Thermal Interface Material helps conduct heat from the CPU to the heatsink. A new heatsink will cool it faster. Also, increase your airflow. When the TweakNet PC is done i estimate about 300CFM in and out. CFM means Cubic Feet per Minute. K?
Its hard to find a Socket 423 Heatsink..
You should just fine for now with the stock heatsink and fan just make sure your full load temperatures don't exceed 45-50

No it isn't. www.coolerguys.com has a lot of them. It's hard to find Socket 478 heatsinks though.

Well what the stats of the retail fan?
The best fan there is the Golden Orb which only pushes 20cfm and 26dba.

The best is the fans on the MC462 for socket 423... they push 60 or so CFM i beleive.
Although if he is willing to spend lots of money for it.

there are cheaper ones.
