Ok I just bought a USB 2.0 enclosure and a 500GB Seagate PATA drive. I installed it and set the jumper correctly but windows says there was a problem installing the device when I turn it on. Windows shows a (!) next to USB Mass Storage device. I am running SP2 with all the latest updates.

Should I format the drive in my comp then install it in the enclosure? My 2GB USB flash drive works fine, its just this doesnt.

Oh if I go to the properties for the USB mass storage device this is the error.
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Plug the hard drive to eide connector, if it works and you can access it format it. Then try in enclousure. If it doesn't work then enclousure might not good.

Try different usb headers, try different computer if you have access to one.

What brand and model enclosure did you buy and how much did you pay for it ?

If you bought a decent enclosure, you may have just gotten a bad one. If you bought the cheapest thing you could find, you may just have a crappy enclosure. There are LOTS of cheap and badly designed drive enclosures out there, mainly the cheapest ones. Many of these enclosures are very inadequate for a 7200 RPM drive, if you even get one that has a stable bridge board in it.
