i have it clocked at 2.2 ghz right now wiht a stock heat sink from a p4 3ghz processor. Im just wondering what people have seen from these processors?whats the limit?

it depends on what kind of 2ghz p4 it is. can you run cpuz and post a screenshot for us?

Nixon - I had an old P4 2.0a (Multiplier 20). IIRC the max I could get out of it was 2.6 ghz. 20x130.

its a Northwood.. i bet i could probably get it up to 2.5 with out any problems

yep probably. you might even see 3ghz. ;)

Is it running at 400 or 533? My 2.66 runs great at 3.1ghz (20x156). It seems like it is much faster than the P4 2.0a that I had. They both have the same multi.

IIRC the 2.0a wouldn't go past 125~130ish - that was a long time ago:shrug:

back then, lots of boards didn't have pci/agp locks, so right around there is where the mobo would flake out. ;)

so far im at 2.4 ghz no temp change still around 36*C dident even touch voltage yet.. i bet i can hit 2.8 or 3.0 if i had a nice water cooling

I have a 2.2a B0 engineering sample. It topped out at 2.8 on air & 2.9 on water. What motherboard are you using? I had mine on my AI7.

My first 2.0A maxed out at about 2.5 gig. But, I had a later stepping that was awesome and could O/C up to 3.3-3.4 gig.

WHOA - That's is still impressive. An Abit board?

Yes, I used an Abit IC7 mobo. The CPU was a 2.0A Northwood, s-spec SL6GQ, batch code L245A703 (week 45 of 2002). Looking back at my notes, I was able to benchmark at 3.4 gig (170 FSB). My notes also say it was not Prime95 stable and the vcore was a tad high, but I did play Unreal II for a while with no problem. However, looks like 3.3 gig was Prime stable (not bad). As a side note, this CPU is still being used daily by a buddy. It's been running a sedate 2.66 gig (133 FSB) with default vcore for the last 4 years.

whats your default vcore cuz right now my cpu wont do a fsb of 133. Im at 125 right now with a clock of 2.5 and a vcore at 1.25 .25 more than default and it runs great. I dont know for some reason the computer wont boot up at all at 2.66

have you locked the pci/agp buses?

The default vcore is 1.5v if you have a B0 stepping. So that means you raised it .025v to 1.525v. You might need a little more vcore to reach 133 MHz FSB. Try increasing it a little more & see if it helps.

IMO 1.60v is a good max vcore setting & 1.65v should be considered the absolute ceiling.

I have a C1 and D1 stepping 2.0A that run at 2.66G at default vcore. The D1 stepping run 3.1G at 1.55V with a less than stellar gigabyte 845PE motherboard. My wife is using this computer running at 2.66G.

I havent looked at the agp/pci buses so i dont know if they are locked or not i believe they are set to normal if so what should i increase them to. And also what is the difference between b0, c1 and d1 stepping?

when you raise the fsb, it will automatically raise the pci and agp bus speeds. these speeds are very sensitive, and don't like to run very far out of spec. when you get stuck around 120-125fsb, this is usually to blame. you need to lock them to 33/66 for pci and agp. there should be a setting in the bios somewhere. i don't have my ic7-max3 set up right now, so i can't tell you exactly where to look.

the steppings are just revisions. usually the newer stepping overclock better, because intel refined them a bit. you can use CPUZ to see what stepping you have.

well i have revision B0 stepping 4 and im checking up on that agp/pci thing..

P4 2.0a B0 step 4
vcore 1.5 (i think that's the default value)
fsb 132mhz (at 133 i get errors...but at 134 it run fine:eek: )
speed 2640mhz (mult 20x)

@ asus p4s800 w/ 512ddr400 (underclock at 176mhz)

i use it always at this speed... next week i will do some 'burn-in'

Usually with those old B0 steppings, if you can reach 2.66 gig, then you are doing great.

if its a 2 gig p4 on the socket 478 it might be ther older whilamette core. is it a 400 or 800 fsb? if its 400 is whilamette and i had one of those on an old abit TH7-II with the rdram. i got a 1.8 clocked at 2.2 for quite some time now. i think its been 6 years been at the same OC. i went and upgraded to a northwood 800fsb on the icy-max 3 and got a 3.0 northwood at 3.5 for 4 years at that speed. now i got this rig and i havent overclocked yet.
