With only few resistor, capacitor and a chip, u can build it with less than few bucks, goto http://www.siliconchip.com.au/, but it didn't teach u how to bulid it, because of copy right I cannot publish it here, u can try to access this australian magazine Dec issus, or u can mail me personally, I can give u the circuit diagram....

Because my new Win Xp does not allow me to use my Brother MFC Printer/scanner, therefore I cannot send u the schematic that I got in my magazine, but I found a site that is as good as the circuit in my magazine, goto
http://www.infraredport.com/ir-modul_en.HTML
The heart of this transceiver is the TFCS4500 chip, u can search a lot of information about this chip in any search engine. The circuit I got is a bit different to the site I provide to u, the only different is, the circuit I got require 1 more resistor and 2 more capactors which purpose is for filter out the noise, anyway, I think both of the circuits should work well.
If u want to discuss any think about electronic, feel feel to reply me. Good luck :>

I have this/ (http://www.jdresearch.com/irdrive/) in the 3.5" model. It plugs into your IR header and you can also get a FIR cable if your header supports it and get up to 4mbps transfer.
Got it for AUD$38, around US$18.
I use mine for my pda.
any idea how u can make it work as a remote control reciever to change tracks in ur winamp while u lying in bed :S

just a FYI IR networking in lousy and it using a point of site communications which means you have to have both IRs pointing directly at one another for it to work and if anything gets in the way your cut off.
We use to use this for printing at school at it was a nightmare!
