Can't get speakers to work with line-out

My friend bought some speakers for his laptop, but we can't get them to work using the line-out plug, only with the headphone jack. We tried messing around with the SPDIF settings under the realtek audio manager, and poked around the windows sound manager to no avail. Any help would be appreciated, if you need any more info just ask. Thanks.
