View Full Version : Unlocking XP, I have a tip for you all

I have been unlocking my XP on and off. Can't seem to get it to unlock correctly. I can get most multipliers to work but some still don't. Just a tip on cleaning it to everyone. I have had to "redo" my bridges a few times and found after cleaning them off, they still have junk on the chip. Can't see it, but it does cause problems. I used a Dremel tool with a nice felt tip, sorta like cotton, to clean the contacts before re-applying the silver traces. Just a tip, it worked pretty good for me. I still can't get the bridges to unlock though, even after testing with a multimeter, I tried booting and it boots at different default speeds every time. I think I'm gonna leave it at stock. But..the dremel tip cleans them good and doesn't wear down the organic material on the chip. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks

Thats a good idea, but I think most people would be hesitant to take a dremel to their XP, felt tip or no.

What are you using to try to unlock?

Using a silver conductive pen. I tested every bridge with a multimeter and all are working perfect but it still boots up at the wrong default voltage.

wrong voltage or wrong multiplier?

Oh sorry.....boots up as an XP 1700+ at default multiplier, it should boot as a 1600+ at default.

it sounds like you may have shorted bridges if it's defaulting to 11x? what did you use to fill the pits?

Any way to test if I got something down in the bridge area where the laser burn is? I am 100% sure that I didn't cross the bridges on top...the only thing I can think is the same as the post above. That there is a bridge that has some conductive stuff in the laser hole. I filled them with superglue.

Some if not most superglue is conductive.......

Then why does everyone use it. Tom's hardware does.

Some of em don't.

Why would oc.com, tom's hardware, and everyone else be using superglue? What are you using?

I masked horizontally with tape, filled pits with epoxy and wiped flat with a finger before it set. Let it cure and then unlocked with a circuitwriter pen. WA-LA! good to go. Super glue worked on my bro's 1700xp too. Generic radio shack "future glue" (lol) is what I used on that one to fill the pits. The multimeter test is a good one. I made the traces by putting a blob over all the jumpers and letting it dry, then using an exacto knife to cut breaks in the blob using the nearby L3s as a reference. It worked the 1st time.

i think you can use the multimeter to check across the bridges maybe? i know that you can check to one the pins to see if the bridge goes to ground, i just have no clue which pin, or where i read the info, sorry. you may have to clean up (since you have what sounds like a godd method for that) and start over. BTW i used regular artist's acrylic to fill the pits on mine, worked great and very easy to undo.

You have to be careful of the "L1" and the gold arrow above the bridges, they are both grounded and if the top bridge touches one of them it will ground out too.

This I did not know.

If you get the stuff in teh pits it will be locked at 11x multiplier. some people can manange to clean it out but maybe be a pain. try 166x11 that woudl be nice!

Yeah! So that's what happened to me the 1st time! I was wondering...why is my 1800+ now a 1700+? Now I know what I did wrong!
