View Full Version : Problems with pumps at sub-zero?
I have a Maxijet and about to start sub-zero cooling. I notice from the literature on the pump they do not recommend going below 0C presumably because of effects on the pump bearings. Anyone had any problems?

I am not sure but I have my pump running right now in a cryo vat at about -15 deg. C. I think it just slows it down for me anyway. The coolant gets really thick at that temp and must hinder the flow. This is where it would be a good idea to maybe add about a half jug of some good vodka or everclear:D Loosen it up a little;) I think pump under load make their own heat so I would worry about it being to cold.

They may say don't use under 0C to stop it icing up which could damage the motor.

I would think that the bearings would shrink a little and maybe cause some vibration at lower temps. However, if you buy a new pump and run it in and only run it at subzero, that should take care of that. If you run it in at a higher temp, then it'll seat in it's bearings for that higher temp.
I figure...
