View Full Version : windows update!!!!!!!!!!****ing microsoft
i downloaded most of the updates today, i have Win Me.
downloaded, then restarted after install, then everytime i would try to open, delete, close, hotkey ANYTHING explorer would lock right up, i had to close explorer everytime i wanted to do something, ex. open I.E. (5.5) close exp., type a addy close exp., the site opens goto click on something whoa cant do that gotta close exp., explorer loaded itself after every closing.,
Luckily i was able to restore settings from earlier that day.
just my 2 cents, not a driver but some were :)
well, with about a gazillion fdisks and reinstalls of win98 and winxp, i've come to the conclusion that the only way to update successfully is to do them one at a time and make sure to reboot in between, even when it doesn't tell you to. this is the only way that it works right for me. you even want to make sure that you install all the critical updates seperately, from the oldest to the latest . . . it bundles them together, so you usually have to uncheck a few of them the first couple of times . . . like i said, this is what i have to do, i dunno about anyone else . . .

i had the same prob back in the day. Then i changed to win2k pro and all was good :)
Both myself & friends have noticed strange things happening after downloading updates.
For example: I could`nt roll back any restore points after a multi update.
After reformating & doing seperate upgrades like elBogg there seemed to be no probs.

Well I can't laugh at you because I did the same thing and all I can say is get rid of ME like a bad habit. I ebayed my copy and I suggest you do the same.

Why don't you just get Win2K? It doesn't have any problems with updates (partially because it only ever got 2). It's stable. If a game or something else crashes, windows doesn't. It also very fast and much better than ME and 98
Ahh but is it better than WinXP?
Is`nt that the way we are being directed for the future?
Having said that I`m not exactly happy with WinXP at the moment because of this bug issue re: Via/XP/Nivida/Sound-cards?
But I suppose it will be sorted in time (hopefully very soon )

I would suggest that you do not talk about that ever again on these forums, lest a mod get wind of it. If you want to talk about that kind of stuff, there are ot[H] (http://www.hardocp.com)er places you can go.
I run Windows 2000, and I must say, that I am very very happy w/ its performance. It is in my opinion, the best OS that Microsoft has ever released, and its the only Windows OS that I actually enjoy using.

Thanks to Oni, I will only add that you should re-read the Forum Guide that is at the top of every category. We do not allow discussion of software cracks AT ALL .

i had ALOT of problems with win95se locking up and restarting. i cleaned my harddrive and installed win2k pro and it is awesome. the program may freeze but you can always end task and windows keeps rollin rollin rollin...hehe. i've never had win me but everyone that talked about it had nothing good to say and xp is too new (not enough support). i'd strongly recommend 2k pro. it is intended for business ya know.......

I installed winXP up from 2k on one machine and ME on the other and I like it better than both of them. Higher O/C speeds, more stability, it made quite a large difference on my P4 machine.
What kinds of problems are they having with via/xp/nvidia/soundcards.....I'm using a geforce mx400 and SB x-gamer 5.1 .....loaded xp drivers off of their websites, did not download amd or via chipset drivers, those do make it run slower, and they are not XP drivers anyway, and haven't had a lick of trouble.....even downloaded ALL, and I like this feature, all of the critical updates at the same time, something like 18 megs, better than having to reboot after every one, never had the problem in ME of screwing things up with multiple updates either.
