Ok im going to get the E6600 Chips was thinking about getting some of this Ram:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-000-CK

6400. 400mhz DDR2 - 800MHZ

But someone said to me if your not going to overclock you would never use the full 800mhz of that RAM because of the E6600:

E6600 = 9x Multiplier at 266mhz = 2.4

Your E6600 has a 1066MHz bus so by default your RAM will be running at 533MHz (which is what PC2-4200 RAM is at stock).

Is that correct?

correct. are you just going to be running stock? if so, you can buy really cheap ram.

but why wouldn't you want to overclock? it is quite easy, and the gains are huge.

I can understand that all being right the way it works out but im still slightly skeptical.

One thing i still dont understand is if i dont touch anything in the bios leave everything as it is which will be AUTO, why wouldn't the RAM default to that Speed so 6400 - 800mhz? just for arguments sake

Yes the CPU will be set at 9x multi 2.4ghz (AUTO) but if that is on auto and the RAM is auto everything should run what it is intended to run at?

you can run an upwards devider on the memory, so it runs at 400mhz, while your fsb stays at 266mhz. it won't really give you much of a performance increase, and it isn't the auto setting, but you can do it.

Wouldent it already be set at 400mhz auto considering it is 6400 (800mhz)

So the Ram would actully run at 800mhz?

no, your ram runs at the same speed as your FSB. with the e6400, the fsb is 266. so the ram runs at 266mhz (or ddr2-533), unless you choose in the bios to run it faster.

RAM frequency on most motherboards if set on auto would run the 2:3 ratio which means with a default 266 FSB that's DDR2-800, but running at anything above 4:5 or 3:4 ratio really don't gain you much. I would get at least DDR2-667 though if you aren't overclocking.
