Hi
I am running a p4 2.8ghz northwood cpu (533 fsb) on an asus p4s800d motherboard, I have overclocked it to 3.0ghz by putting the fsb speed up to 573mhz, and it seems very stable, not 100% sure if this is the best way to do an overclock or indeed if this cpu is any good for an overclock!
Is there any software out there that will monitor the cpu temperature? i installed motherboard monitor 5 but it gives stupidly high readings even if i run it at 2.8ghz!

Hope someone can help

If your board has sensors for it everest home edition should point out your cpu and/or system temps. Check oldversion.com for the program.
What heatsink are you using by the way? It may be possible if it's an old stock-type p4 or if it's full of dust that your processor might actually be running at fairly warm temps. Additionally, what temperatures are you getting with MBM (and are you reading them in celcius)?

Are you overclocking in BIOS or in windows? You can run Prime95 with SuperPi to test for cpu stability.

It is a standard p4 heatsink, just installed the everest home edition and it is compatible with my mobo, running at 32 degrees celsius so it says! seems to be no change in temperature if i put it back to 2.8ghz tho!
Overclocked it in the bios by changing fsb speed from 533mhz to 573mhz (was told in a pc shop to do this)

You also need to lock the PCI/AGP bus at 33/66 before you raise the FSB. Failing to do this can cause corruption on your hard drive.
Depending on your RAM, you may be able to go higher as long as the temperatures don't get too high.

I'm not sure if the p4s800d (SiS chipset) has an AGP/PCI lock. Should be fine staying at 143 MHz though. I wouldn't want to go any higher though, not worth risking the HDD data for a few MHz.
32C isn't hot for a P4 northwood. Try to keep it under 50C when under a load and overclocked.

I left Prime95 running while i was in work (13.5 hours) pc still up and running (not crashed) and temperature is going between 47 & 50 degrees celsius with prime95 running...
You can tweek the fsb on this board without it overclocking the memory or agp, not going to push it any further than 3ghz tho, aint got the cash for a new cpu if it does go pop :)
Thank you all for your tips

My board and processor though let me change the multiplier, and it had hyperthreading enabled. My parents have it now, runs 24/7 at 3.2 Gig. Was an ASUS P4something-800 with 478-pin. Stock air and volt. Not too much of an O/C but, not bad for 24/7
