hi, first off i'm new to computer stuff and I need some input btwn 2 old cpus that I can get 1 or the other for free.
cpu 1:
Intel Celeron D 2.93ghz s478.
I would pair this up with an MSI PM8M-V or ASRock P4I65G
cpu 2:
AMD duron 1.4ghz s462 (newer durons)
I would use a shuttle MN31N
I would be using this mainly for Internet surfing, email, ms office, photoshop, gaming (Civ4, Total Rome, CSS and 1.6, BF2)
I also have an x700 pro to use, 512x2 ddr400. I'm not planning to o/c.
so which should I opt for? thank you!

I personally have never been very fond of the Celeron line. But in this case I would go with the Celeron vs the older Duron. Also welcome to the forums! :welcome:
The Celeron D would smoke a Duron. Easy choice.

To break it down here are some spec sheets for both CPU's and it's pretty easy to see that the Celeron would have a large advantage.
Celeron:

Duron:

thank you guys! I dont know nothing about computer parts and what is good and not.
I'll get the celeron however I dont know if its the D class 533 yet. I've search around and the only 2.93ghz is the D. I'll triple check with the guy giving it away.
Also, the MSI board I was planning on getting does not support dual channel vs the asrock does. does dual channel make that big of a difference?
thank you

Yes dual channel is preferred, it has a higher bandwidth. It's not the actual memory that is dual channel but the platform which it sits on. And the Duron's did not support dual channel memory either. Here is a good read about why it matters.

thank you for the link Metloaf, I'm glad I choose the right board then. I bought the ASRock P4I65G w/ Intel 865G chipset, almost got a board with a via chipset hehe. Also searching around I noticed that my celly D can overclock great. However I won't try it yet, I'll read other posts to see how to o/c. thanks guys.
ps: i played bf2140 and my god it looks great, hopefully my upcoming pc can play it lol

celeys dont put out a lot of heat so if you wanted to get BIG a Ninja hs would work passively for this cpu.

if you want active i would suggest this one

or this one

You dont even need a big one
Accoriding to my friend, his skt 478 2.0ghz veleron northwood idles around 30 on stock
so just get a decent aftermarket and turn fan off for passive

alright got the system up and running.
celeron D 340 s478 (2.93ghz)
ASRock P4I65G
2x512 corsair value ram cl3 (ddr400)
80gig seagate ata100
ati x700pro
500w ocz psu
overall i'm happy with the setup, but I had to rma the board today since it didn't want to boot this morning. to make a long story short the 5v rails on 3 psu were blown so technician said there is a short in the power connector. I can't believe a motherboard can fry psu, i thought it was the other way around.
