View Full Version : n00b needing OC help
First of all, I would like to apologise as this would be another "how do i overclock my cpu" question. I know, how tiring it can be though I guess we all have to start off somewhere.
Well, I recently purchased a new comp.
CPU: E6400
MOBO: p5b deluxe wifi
RAM: 2GB Corsair Value Select PC-5300
CASE: Antec Sonata II
I don't want to overclock it to the extreme, just to get an additional boost in performance. So can someone provide me with a step by step guide as to what to do please?
Thanks a lot.

i would go with some value pc-6400, that way you can for sure run 400fsb/400mhz ram/ddr2-800 without issue, and the price diff is probably only $5-15. the cpu and mobo look good tho. what psu will you be using?
as for step by step instructions, it really helps if you have the system all built and ready to go. ;)
um the psu is the default one that came with the case.
"Specially designed low-noise SmartPower 2.0 450W ATX12V v2.01 power supply"
And the pc has been fully built already.
The main thing that will hold you back is that RAM, but still you'll be able to get 333 FSB out of it at least and maybe with some extra vdimm, up to 350 FSB (2.8 gig) depending on how well the RAM overclocks of course.
First thing to address is cooling. What CPU heatsink and case cooling do you have?
Overclocking is done by going into the BIOS and increasing FSB a little at a time. Then check temps and test for stability.

gfx card?
Gonna want to add into this thread here as to not start another one if possible.. But I'm a total noob aswell when it comes to o/c with intel's architecture. I was a god of the old athlon xp o/c with the straightforward fsb and mem ratios etc.. However this intel stuff kinda has me confused. Some questions I wouldn't mind having answered are thus:
1) What is with all this ddr2 spec nonsense IE: ddr2-533 ddr2-800 etc, and is this tied into ram modules advertised as pc2 5300, pc2 6400?
2) Secondly how do you make out the fsb/mem dividers? like right now my e6400 shows a rated fsb of 1064 wich is 266mhz x 4 right?. So lets say I set the fsb to 400mhz, is it possible for the ram to still run at 1064? or will it be higher than that?.
3) Seeing as I have pc2-6400 spec memory what exactly does this entitle me to do o/c wise?
Basically I'm just trying to understand intel's quad pumped architecture and all this new ddr2 spec stuff, I've tried looking for guides to o/c the core2 duo but all I come up with is sites that just quote fsb speed and multiper junk, nothing that helps me understand the science behind intel's architecture and how to o/c it. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

In brief - Find AI tuning in the BIOS, switch to "manual".... type in what FSB you want.
Thanks, that page was very helpfull for me, also doing a lil messing around myself in the bios has tought me quite alot... after seeing it in action it's not really hard for me to understand anymore.. again thanks for the link.
