I know it's been mentioned a time or two here but this mod needs it's own thread.

Black mesa source is simply a total conversion of the original half life game using the source engine, all new textures, models, you name it. Totally from scratch.

I'll let the video speak for itself. My jaw refuses to re-connect to my head....Drool is uncontrollable right now..

Yes!!!!!!

Glouon Gun, here I come. I'm SO excited. Like I played through HL1 in GoldSrc (the original HL engine) and I was still kinda impressed. It just has that old school feel to it.

I've been following this mod for awhile now. They just opened up positions for voice actors so they are at least somewhat close to being finished. It looks really good, they redid the single player, added co-op mode and redid the multiplayer and training room.

I'm with you there SxS, I can't wait for this expansion to come out. I was going to play through the original HL in the source engine but I got bored of it and wanted more. I hope it doesn't turn out like Duke Nukem Forever and have it TAKE forever to produce.....

I believe DrDuke was being sarcastic. By saying his mod is way better and the perfect game, that alone being awesome, that he was mocking this Black Mesa Source mod. And by saying it will be released when it is done, that the release date is unknown to anyone, or whether or not it will ever be finished. By saying he is taking pre-orders on it though, he is saying he's gladly taking people's money without giving anything in exchange.

All in all, he's saying that this mod is taunting us with candy images but we arn't getting anything of what they show us, no matter how much they tease us we might not see this release any time in the near future. I think otherwise.

Well at least there putting out content and have a up to date website compared to other no shows like DNF.

That and I remember when we first installed it how big it was.. I think over 400 megs.

Deathman is right. Remember how long it took to get Half-Life 2 out? Remember how many delays and rescheduled releases there were? But look what we got from it. A game that came out two years ago and is STILL making a big impact upon the gaming community. I think this mod will be the same way.

Sweet looking.

Somebody said something above about getting Half-Life: Source done? I thought that was made available months ago? Could have sworn I saw it available for download through Steam back before I frankensteined my computer in September. Clue me in, because I'm obviously missing something.

Half life source is out, but all valve did is ported it to the source engine and redid the water. All the textures and props and everything is the same.

Nah, the FEAR engine seemed too much like Quake 3 to me and it's physics were bad and graphics average. At least Half Life 2 attempted to adopt a more realistic approach... :p

Being a huge fan of HL I was disappointed with HL2 and really didn't think it should have received game of the year. Nothing "new" was brought to the table in the aspect of game play. The engine was good but it really never captured my interest of the original HL did. The original HL I would rush home just to play. HL2 was ok, but I had the "I will finish this later" feel. Then I played FEAR and I was hooked as I was hooked with HL.. I've played FEAR 6 times through already.. HL at least 10 throughout the years. I liked HL2 Ep. 1 better and on my 3rd time through that.. I only played HL2 twice through.

This is coming from a person who thought FarCry suck as well.. not the graphics but game play. When I play FPS I always play on the hardest level. I felt that in FarCry instead of making the enemies a little smarter and a little tougher.. they just through more at you.. instead of 10 in normal play there were 30 on hard. I got bored with FarCry real quick. I dislike DOOMIII and Quake 4. It was the same way and the AI were easy to manipulate and easy to kill without losing damage playing on the hard level. Doom III was the same stuff on .. dark room, enemy jump out of the dark, that was fine for the first couple of levels. I really enjoy the COD Series and Brother In Arms as well. I'm definitely going to be downloading Black Mesa.

I was the opposite of you with HL2 and Fear.... F.e.a.r had the more 'i'll finish this in spare time' kinda things. HL2 had the 'OMFG I MUST PLAY NOW'.

Every person has differing opinions, but as a HL2 fan.. I can't wait for this Black Mesa :D

Yes, but the HL2 managed to look as good or almost as good as anything in Doom 3 and FEAR while having much lower system requirements. HL2 and CS:S run quite acceptably on a GF3 Ti200, and pretty well on a Radeon 9500/9600, while Doom 3 and FEAR want at least a 9700 Pro or a GF 6600.

Also the source engine is frequently being updated with features like HDR, improved lighting, image based rendering, etc.

"Source" Engine owns the DOOM III engine hands down... Doom III not even close to the Source Engine.

If you compare what the original Doom 3 engine was capable of compared with the original Source engine, that isn't true. Neither Doom 3 nor Quake 4 looked all that good, but some of the engine demos were very impressive. They may not have been practical in realtime on normal hardware, and so I think Source is probably a much better practical game engine, but the Doom 3 engine is capable of some amazing effects.

What made HL2 so good was Havok. The Doom 3 physics engine doesn't even come close, and the speech was far more impressive in HL2, and so was the specular - at least everything didn't have a shrink wrap shine to it.

You really can't compare engines like that becuase it's apples to oranges. EP2 is going to have a much better look to it than what was used for HL2. Different lighting, model animations, texturing, vegetation, etc. It's all being revamped.

The same is happening with the Doom3 engine. It was tweaked and updated for both Quake 4 and PREY. It's still being updated too. Anyone seen the screenshots for Quake wars? That's the D3 engine's next iteration and I would hardly call that junk.

I think the problem with the source and D3 engines though is that they're still considered "outdated" technology compared to what's being used for Crysis, Alan Wake and Bioshock. The good news though is that anything using the source or D3 engines will run superbly on aging hardware.

As far as the fear engine goes, I absolutely LOVED the enormous particle effects that were used like flying paper, concrete, debris, etc during the furious fire fights but it still felt like a cartoony game. I knew it was a game. Source has a much grittier and "real" look to it IMO.

I read some comment by Doug Lombardi to the effect that they planned for the Episode 3 iteration of the Source engine to be as much of an improvement over the original HL2 as it was over the original GoldSrc. I know this is rather vague and typical of marketing speak, but by and large valve staff don't talk BS to the press (except regarding release dates).

The other thing is that valve really seem to be working on some interesting technologies to allow for much greater efficiency rather than the best IQ, they have been talking up image based rendering and some clever multithreading for the next release of source.

Keep this on topic, pleeeeease.

Honestly, I'm really excited. I can't wait to do some of the levels like The Package or On A Rail again. The train level, yes.

Better physics/AI/gun mechanics will make this game truly great.

Yup, physics based particle effects, really cool groundbreaking stuff. Search on these forums someone posted a link to the article. :)

I want to see what they do for xen. That level was the worst part of the original hl. The dev's won't say anything about how the plan to redo xen, so I think there is going to be a suprise for that level.

Yeah Xen BLEW.

Like it was very well done in OpFor, I thought, with just small cameos in the story (displacer, and a few other moments).

The thing about Xen is that while yes it is an alien homeworld and all, it just looks like trash and is really counterintuitive. I think it'd be cool if they had a few easy jumping puzzles and stuff but also just kept it simple.

I think it would be better if they had done away with any jumping puzzles at all and made it kind of odd and dreamlike.

That's just horrible :)

But yeah, I just got a holiday pack HL2 set with all the various HL2 and Source version that have come out, but I might as well wait for this to come out instead of playing HL:Source. The original Half Life was one of the only non-stealth FPS games I ever got into.
