I had that problem once with Windows 98SE, it was my video card which was causing the problem. Donno how, but after a certain time of disabling standby, when I put it again about a month later, it worked without a problem.
um have u gone into your rclick| properties |screensaver |power options and played around with things like hibernate, and what to do during powerdown, etc. have u tried just turning off standby mode. but check your hibernation mode. that could be if you go into hibernation and it tries to do some things u could be locking there. also check your bios for pm events check and see what you have enabled to wake your computer, u may have nothing and so u cannot
it would also be a detonator 3 or XP issue if youre using one of them. some versions has known problems managing the hibernation mode under W2K and 98.
