Whats the best way to run work borg's right now?

I have 3ea. P4 HT machines and 2ea. none HT P4's. Five of the machines are 2.8 ghz and the other is 2.66 ghz. All have 512 meg of ram.

I have the HT's running 2ea. small packets and the none HT's on small packets on win xp. Im close to unloading the clients. It seems they are now working sooooo hard and burning up soooo much power thats its just about not worth keeping them loaded down and running 24/7.

The owners of the company don't care if the machines are folding. I have permission to borg machines that the daily users say ok to, concerning borgation. The newest machine in the office is a dual core. But the ***** at the keyboard doesn't want her machine folding. She's a brown nose. And the fact is the owner's wouldn't fire me if I did borg it. They would set back and laugh at her as they asked me to take the client off.

So what to do with these P4's that are basically wearing them self's out for next to nothing?

I am sure a few people will tell you let them drop off , and unload , just so they can catch up but ... other than that if your not paying the power and you have permission from the boss , I say let them run , but maybe not use 100% of cpu maybe drop them down to 90 ish % and save the proc , or try to prolong the life of the dell if you can . I have 3 rigs throttled back to not use 100% , and yes they are work borgs , yes I have permission , and yes they are dells . Unfortunately mine are the 1.8ghz dells but hey it all counts

good luck in what ever you decide , and the person with the duo? if you already have the boss' permission run it as a service .

Given how long the patty's take to melt, just running 1 instance on the HT p4's might not be a bad idea. Takes a bit of a points hit but will get the wu's done faster.

Thats how i am running half of my remaining HT prescotts now ... the faster ones i leave 2 instances most of the time but they run at 3.7+ ghz. The others (3.4, 3.6) i only run 1 instance unless they need to clean up some wu's left from me swtiching to xp during the recent smp outages.

Wedo's one click seems to work best for borging. (IMHO)

P4s make the same ppd today they made 3 years ago. Why stop?

I also go along with running only 1 client on the HT equipped P4's. Even though they can do 2 clients, the performance difference isn't that much between 1 and 2 clients and it will both speed production on the 1 client left running and actually give the processor a little rest too. 1 client can't keep the pipeline full on a P4, especially a pressie with that 30+ stage pipeline. So the processor gets a little break by running just 1 client and I also find that my remaining P4 machine also seems to perform more responsively too, with normal tasks that way.

Ive always had the philosophy that any work borgs should only run 1 client. With only 512mb ram I wouldnt run -advmethods or bigpackets so as not to risk getting a memory intensive wu. Back when QMD's were the norm, they could cripple a box like that.
