I may be building a core 2 duo rig for a friend soon and I want to know which is my best cpu/mobo combo if I'm NOT overclocking. He doesn't mind spending a little extra cash so I was thinking I'd just get a E6600 and a P965 chipset Asus board (he would prefer Asus). I'd get a e4300/6300+ds3 and oc' the hell out of it but he doesnt want to overclock at all.

Hmm maybe I should have put this in the general computing section but.. recommendations on ram and a quiet heatsink as well? I'm leaning towards ddr800 value ram and a arctic cooling freezer

would the ASUS P5W DH DELUXE be overkill? he doesnt mind spending more on a good mobo.

What other features does he want? Any plans for SLI? Crossfire? Does he want a Matrix RAID?

i would go with the p5b-dlx, or the p5w-dh. the p5w has a remote that your friend would probably like. are you sure you can't convince him to OC it even to 3ghz? that would be a cake walk..

if he's not overclocking and insists on Asus, just pick an asus board that has the features you want like matrix raid + sli, then pick the fastest C2d you can afford. There's not much to think about if there's no overclocking.
