Yeah but you could make a Yatta music video collection on DVD if you had a burner.

Actually I've been wondering about making backups of my son's movies. He insists on putting the movies in himself, and I don't know how many more sets of sticky fingerprints ol' Tigger can take.

Does anyone know?

no...burners are only 7 gig's or so in 2 layer. Real DVD's are up to 17 gigs in 4 layer. You wouldn't have room unless you split the movie up.

Yeah, 7 gigs is fine if u gonna split it up into just the main movie with 1 language. most dvd movies are about 5-6 GBs w/ surround sound.

BTW- Is it REALLY illegal to backup cds/dvds, i was under hte impression that each EULA is different. Plus i thought "fair use" protected our rights to backup our own media... anyone have legal knowledge about this?

This is a very misunderstood topic and an abused one by consumers and the industry alike (I'm guilty are you). It's against one of the amendments to make a law preventing people from making copies of information they pertained in a legal way as long as:

a) They don't use it in any fraudulent way
b) They don't sell it or advertise the product in anyway
c) They don't give away the product

The government can not arrest you for doing this thought the current patent or copyright owner must press suit against you.

Those cover all the things you can't do with your copied items it is broad however, most companies wouldn't mind if you payed for a bilboard and advertised their product. As for being guilty about stuff the industry is guilty by putting protective encryptions on the product but this was stimulated first by the consumer. I can't remember this but my parents can when tape recorders first were introduced the industry was outraged and tried to get it banned. This is a very contrivertial topic, some people say its information on a computer and its not actually physical so you can you say its yours? I say people put long hard hours into the product and should get payed for it. But $20 bucks for a CD? Why cause executives are to greedy!

So you can be suied but not arrested for backing up dvds?

It is morally wrong to deny people the right to backup their media.

It probably is illegal, a friend of mine did 3 years for ripping one of those tags off of a mattress!
