View Full Version : Who can answer this one?
Ok, I'm ready to take a dive into the abysmal art of constructing a PC and since money is a BIG issue in this house, I would like to start off with the most important components first, and still be able to use the system by filling in the remaining pieces I have with the pieces I already have in my puny system. What MoBo should I purchase to accommodate an AMD 1800 Athlon, 128 megs of what ram and what hard-drive. I just want to get the "backbone" of this new system going without having to buy all now. I want to be able to add and upgrade as monies allow.
Thanks for all your insight and time.

ask the boys and girls in the AMD section as they would know best....
But i think it would be safe to say the Soltek SL-75DRV2 would b a great MB...
But once again the boys/girls in the AMD section will know best...
Also, think 512megs of RAM its so cheap right now...
If you cant drop that much, 256 is the real min you want, 128 may b starving that fast CPU you plan on getting of data
cough** IWILL** COUGH ** COUGH

If you're on a budget, the Shuttle AK31 is about the best value out there right now. It's not the absolute fastest at the moment, but it's one of the best and is also one of the cheapest. I agree that I'd start with 256 meg of ram. Go with Crucial ram, it's very good, and very reasonably priced. For a hard drive, the field is wide open. Personally I'd go with an IBM 60GXP series, but opinions differ. There are cheaper hard drives out there, you just have to decide where your price/performance break is.
Don't forget that you'll also need a video card and a case/psu in order to get the thing moving.

I just got my basics in my new system and am using many of my old components in it.....I got the Gigabyte GA 7DX Mobo...but with a slight floppy prob....but the mobo takes DDR PC2100 RAM.....in which I purchased 512 MBS....I plan on getting an IBM Deskstar 7200 RPM HD...80 GB...and have seen prices around 100 dollars on Pricewatch.com...i hear that is very good, considering IBM makes pretty decent HD's......hope this helps.......have fun with it...
Elitegroup k7s5a motherboard is pretty darn cheap (around $60 canadian) and will support an athlon xp....not a great overclocker, but very good budget board.

If you plan to overclock I would go with the board that nihili mentioned the Shuttle. If you don't plan to overclock the board that Compuwife mentions the Elitegroup k7s5a is also very good and can be had a little cheaper. Both these boards are very good.
