What is the Compaq model number? Is that 2.0ghz a Pentium4 M or Celeron M?
If you have a Mobile Celeron the highest replacement is a 2.4ghz/256/400.
Pentium 4 M goes to 2.6ghz/512/400 or 3.2ghz/512/533 if the chipset supports the higher FSB.

You need to find you actual model number - Presario 3000 is just a series, not a model. From there check to see which chipset you have & whether or not is can support a 533fsb cpu. That will open up a bunch more options for you if it does.

I think that Celeron (http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=49&sSpec=&OrdCode=) is actually a desktop chip ps2cho, even though it's in a laptop. Mobile Celerons (http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=58&sSpec=&OrdCode=) have 256kb of L2
That's why it's so important to figure out the chipset. Some laptops have desktop chipsets - makes it even more confusing. lol
Here's a link to HP/Compaq support which should be able to detect the model, Memphis.

Edit: Cool you already found it. :)
SiS 650 chipset is a desktop chipset. I'm guessing then that any 400FSB non-mobile P4 should work (CPUz says Pentium 4 not Pentium 4 Mobile, correct?). I've been searching around & can't tell if that chipset supports 133FSB too.

You may want more ram, but PC2100 is fine whether you use a 400 or 533 FSB cpu.
I have a 2.0ghz mobile celeron in my presario 2170. I tried sticking an old 400fsb P4 in it to get more L2 & a little speed boost. The board wouldn't boot, so I had to put the celery m back in it.

bump anyone else got any ideas?
Yeh, my CPU is a desktop chip stuck in my laptop. Thats why it runs so hot...
