I'm trying to share my calbe internet between my laptop and my desktop but I don't want to keep disconnecting one for the other. I already have the NIC cards annd a regular,non-switching hub, I need to know what kind of software would let my comps share an IP address between the two. Thanx

just run a hub.....

A 4port hub between the modem and both NICs would fix that... now the cable on your modem to your comp is probably a crossover so you will need to get 3 patchcords.... or ''straight through'' cables.

I know the spec difference between a straight cable and a cross over, but how will that allow both comps to be on the net at the same time?

If your ISP supports multiple IP's from one modem, then just get yourself a hub, plug your modem into your Uplink port on the hub, then run straight cable from port 1 on the hub to one computer, and port 2 on the hub to the other computer. The only problem is that when you're using the Uplink port on the hub, you can't use the port next to that (its usually the last port in the row, so it'd be port 5 on a 5-port hub).

So this will let both comps on the net at the same time, or will the isp have to be able to support the IP sharing as well?

It will let both comps on the net at the same time, and it should work on any ISP, but you should check with them to make sure they allow it.

yoru provider is probably running DHCP - which means everytime you boot up and connect - that computer will get the ip address... and as far as what comp it is the ISP could care less... just when you have the hub... hook the modem up to the 'uplink' port and the computers to anyother open port.

use staright through cable on all of it.
