iv got 2 pc's one is a newish packard bell the other is a compaq presario.im changing the processor in my packard it has a pentium4 2.93gh with a 775 socket iv bought a new pentium4 3.2gh with 775 socket so a straight swap,now i want to no can i put the old pentium4 in my compaq. the problem is the compaq has a 478 socket and i dont no if the socket can be changed so i can use the old pentium?any help will be much apreciated cheers

The only way to use a 775 processor is with a socket 775 mobo. You could buy a new mobo for the compaq, but no, it will not work without doing that.

No. The socket is permanent (there are adapters but not for 478 yet).

thanks for the help guys saved me a few head aches as i probably would have tried to fit it had i not known cheers
