View Full Version : Some serious fps increase in CS!
OK I'm soooooooooo stupid ... I've should of figure this out long ago.
I found out before I was only running at 60hz in CS with a resolution of 640x800..
Only getting FPS's of like 20-30-40-50
Then yesterday I figured hell I'll get the 23.11 from nVidia's site !
Then I uped my resolution to 800x600!
Oi I checked the FPS 85fps FLAT NEVER MOVES!
Then I check my refresh rate on the monitor 85hz!
YAY I'm stupid but the 23.11 allowed me add 5mhz more to the core.

does refresh rate affect fps? I currently getting 60-80 fps in Q3 running at 1024x768x32 2x quaility antialise. my monitor is set to optimal. I have the lastest driver from ATI. That number seem kind of low. I have fastwrite enable, 4x apg.
Yes it does. What tsunami means by refresh rate is the vertical frequency used by the monitor to redraw the page. So the higher the refresh rate, the more often the page gets redrawn. This has to be done by the graphics card, so higher refresh rates give you lower FPS.

If you are running with VSync on, the FPS is locked to the refresh rate of the monitor. Which is why you run with Vsync off when benchmarking.

But didn't tsunami fps increased when he bumps it out to 85hz? It sounds like he gets faster fps when hz increased. My is set at optimal. Will it make any difference if I set it manually?

I'll have a guess he's now got Vsync on (it's usually on by default when you install drivers) and it's now locked to 85FPS (max).

If Vsync is on your FPS will be limited to the refresh rate. You cannot display more frames per second than your monitor can display. When he was at 640x480 he was at 60hz, when he uped it to 85hz his max fps also jumped to 85.

yeah, the best thing for you to do is turn off vsync

No vsync should be on, only for benchmarking purposes would you turn it off.

dude, i get a constant 120-150 fps on my VOODOO 3!. and the resolution is at 1024x768 or whatever with openGL. i dunno whats wrong with your geforce, cause thats wierd

How do you change the refresh rate in CS? or did you just change the desktop rr? Cuz my CS has a low refresh rate (like in the 60s), so how do i boost it up?

If you are meaning cs then the cs engine can only do 100fps ,I know this ,my gf2 mx keeps it maxed out just as my gf3 does ,and there is no way to make it go higher.by default it will only goto 72 fps ,all you gotta do is type fps_max 1000 or such in the console to take the default limit off.

Very good question:D CS drops to about 60 something Hz, and it's very annoying. I did the fps_max 9999 thing and now I seem to be getting around 90-100 fps, but the refresh rate still bites.
Thanks

I aggree with Funnyperson,
I would just turn off V-sync ,all it will do is take the bottleneck(being your monitor) off.

Vsync has been off.

I fixed my refresh rate issue using "r_displayrefresh x". X being your desired refresh rate. Do not exceed your desktop refresh rate. I had to reboot to get it to work.
Here's the site I found for the tweak:

Thats what I was thinking. I get that with my 64meg VIVO Radeon.

alrighty, this is when you are looking at the netgraph thing.....if you go into console and type "timerefresh", then your screen will spin around really fast, and that will tell you fps, this is how i know, and mine is always maxed out if i choose to run netgraph, but i usually dont because i only have 56k, and i dont have much bandwidth
For Windows XP I got the nVidia refresh rate fixer and set everything to all "Maximum support monitor can do"...
And it goes like 60hz on 640x800
85hz yaddi yada..

I had my 17" Sanyo bought 2.4 years ago.. It was damn expensive back then but Sanyo isn't a popular brand for monitor I don't even know if they made it!
Oh and I add they don't have no support for my monitor its just been there as plug and play monitor heh.

yeah i have a feelign thats why the nividia refresh rate thing never worked for me....but mines a compaq, doesnt appear to be to popular otherwise they probly would have Xp and Win2k inf files for it....yeah im running plug and play...

Using Powerstrip or Nvmax, also there are settings hidden deep inside display settings for ti...
I can't seem to find V-Sync anywhere in NVMax where is it?

Most people got the Vsync thing on the head, but some didn't, so I'll clarify.
Some games actually come with the Vsync feature built in. This is generally done by processing all information, then using a function such as (wait-for-vsync). (wait-for-vsync) simply pauses any information from being posted on the screen until the monitor has fully refreshed. This means your framerate will never exceed the refresh rate of the monitor.
There is an advantage to this. Sometimes, it can clear up flickering. Sometimes, it can help prevent shearing. But, it will lower your framerate to the refresh rate of the monitor. This doesn't matter, as the human eye can hardly tell a difference from 70hz and up (most people say your eyes "refresh" 40 times a second, but I can see when I am at 60hz).
As for Nvidia's Vsync feature built into the drivers, I'm not sure as to how it works. For me, I have my monitor running at 85hz, thus limiting my framerate to 85fps. Considering you can't really tell a difference say, above 50fps, and personally, I believe Vsync makes the game look better, I would recommend leaving Vsync on unless benchmarking.
you can also goto console and change the maximum frames per second!
type
fps_max 100
your fps could go upto 100 if your card can handle it or more than 100

I still dont understand how anyone is getting more then 100 fps ,I read somewhere that 100FPS is the max for the HL engine ,tell me the trick someone.

But if you dont turn off v-sync ,that wont matter ,it will only go as high as your refresh rate.

That's correct about setting fps_max to 100.... but as I stated before, if Vsync is enabled, your fps will only go as high as your refresh rate.
People dont get higher than 100 fps in HL. What they are doing is typing timerefresh in the console, which allows HL to draw a predetermined amount of frames, then divide the time it took to draw those frames and report fps back to you.
Timerefresh is simply a maximum fps your computer CAN do with HL. It varies widely, as you can go walk into a dark corner on a tiny map and get in excess of 300 fps, whereas in reality, you are getting 100 or so.
