View Full Version : which heatsink should i get

so do you think that the alpha pal6035 is a little bit out dated? i was thinking about getting one but i read something in another thread about it being a little bit old. aside from the obvious choice of the alpha pal8045, is there anything else worth buying? the 8045 is still like $40 and i would also have to buy a new 80mm delta (i already have a 60mm 38cfm), plus i don't want to annoy my room mates too bad. so if possible tell me what you think the best heatsink is that i could use with my 60mm delta. i've been leaning towards the 6035 for a while now, its $20, and 2cooltek.com lists it as being the best performing heatsink for the socket A. thanks
jeff
The 8045 isn't that old. And it's still one of the top performers. It does require an 80mm fan. YOu can find deals on them periodically. Newegg has them with a decent fan for 47 plus 6 bucks shipping. I got a refurbished one from Newegg for 30 bucks shipped. So the deals are there if you look. I think there was a thread in Cyber Deals that had the 8045 right at 30 without a fan.
However, if you want to stay with a 60mm fan, your best bet is the Sk6.

from www.2cooltek.com
this is what it says about the Thermalright SK6:
"This is the copper cooler from Thermalright, the SK6. It utilizes thin copper fins to radiate heat, and has a surface area of over 1 foot. The manufacturer verbage: "All copper design for maximum performance. Soldered fins to base to ensure effective contact. Maximum efficiency thermal pad."
this is what it says about the Alpha Pal6035:
"This is the new flat bottom PAL6035 cooler, with new clip designed for use on Socket A and socket 370 CPUs. It has a copper embedded base, black anodized hexagonal pin fins, and fan mounting duct. It has a flat base, and includes foam spacers you can apply for use on FC-PGA CPUs.
This is the best performing heatsink currently available for the socket A."
is the all copper design better for heat conductivity? also, for those of you with an sk6, does it have a smooth polished bottom like the pal6035? thanks
jeff
In general it's a bad idea to get your information from sites that are trying to sell you a product. I'd have a look at the reviews on Anandtech ( http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1532&p=1 ) and on dansdata ( http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp.htm ).
good luck

For the 60 mm fan the SK-6 is the only way to go, no doubt about that. However some have reported that Thermalright has been lax on the machining of the bottom of the sink so a good lapping may be in order. Another thing to consider is that the 38cfm 60mm delta is really loud. You could get a nice quiet ( 50- 60 cfm) 80mm to cool an MCX462, which is of much better quality than the 8045 and is just about perfectly flat. 2cooltek.com is wrong, the 6035 is hardly the best performing HSF. That title belongs to the MCX462 followed closely by the Alpha 8045.

thank you for saving me a hassle of spending the money on a heatsink that won't perform like i want it to. i already know i want the 8045 but i don't know if i'll be able to make myself afford it since i'm in school right now and us college kids are poor. i'll check out some reviews on the sk6 since i already have the 38cfm delta.
and nihili, thanks for the warning about getting info from sites that are trying to sell me info. i'll try to rememer that from now on.

It's always a good idea to not trust the site's promotional info, though at the time that was written, the 6035 very well could have been the top performing Socket A HSF. It's plausible they're still using the promo quotes from when the 6035 was new... :D
Alpha was ahead of their time back then, so I think it's probably just that...

from the reviews i've read it looks like the SK6 is going to be my heatsink of choice. some of the reviews say its expensive but at 2cooltek its only $29, so that's only $8 more than the 6035 i was thinking about. it looks like i'll need to figure out how to lap it though because this doens't look too hot:

Just remember 1 thing about lapping: You lap to make the HSF perfectly flat (not concave or convex), a mirror finish is not the objective of lapping since there is no real proof that it aids in cooling. Just so you don't waste your time;)

thanks for the tip...how can i be sure its perfectly flat?

jeff Actually when I bought my SK6 it came already lapped I got it at KD Computers (It was the cheapest place at the time ;) ) I'm pretty sure they come like that straight from the factory, though I've heard since the high demand they started getting a lil sloppy....

I recommend the Golden Gate from www.svcompucycle.com . It's made of copper, yet it's light enough that you don't have to worry about breaking the socket tabs. Plus, its clip is very easy to use.

you should look at the golden gate, if you saw that the hard earned money ou were putting into it is only 12 bucks!!! its no SK6 but it would crush the pal6035....

I'd say to go with the SK6 also. It's a good heatsink; almost as good as the Alpha 8045 and Swiftech MC462 in my opinion. I just can't stand the whine of the 38 cfm Delta fans, they are so annoying.

i'm used to it :D i can't stand to NOT have it on now, lol.

I was just about to start a new thread with the same exact question but then I saw this one and it answered all my questions =)
I'm guna get the PAL8045 xtrm kit :P
and Slap it on my Iwill KK266+ with an AMD XP 1600+ =)
thx!
testing out the 8045, about 3c better than my sk6 with the same fan (80mm) I guess becaues the sk6 didnt' design for a 80mm fan so it didn't perform as good.
FYI, cpu temp is only 12-13c over board temp, which is pretty good to me.
